Mrs. Theresa M. (LaTray) Ambrose

UTICA – Mrs. Theresa M. (LaTray) Ambrose, age 96, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, reuniting with many loved ones who had gone before her. Born in Solsville, NY, on December 17, 1928, Theresa was the daughter of the late Ernest and Edith (Porter) LaTray. She was raised locally and attended Utica Free Academy. Following her education, she worked at the old Globe Mill and later many years of employment with General Electric. On October 16, 1954, Theresa married Louis A. Ambrose. The couple shared over 25 years together before Louis’ passing on June 16, 1980. Theresa took immense pride in her role as a wife and as the beloved mother of two. She could prepare a meal like no other and made the house a home. A self-taught cook, she had a natural talent for making everything from homemade ravioli to delicious pies and her famous fish fries. Her flavorful dishes will be dearly missed. After becoming a widow at the young age of 51, Theresa maintained a loving household and was very independent. She mowed the lawn, snowblowed, and shoveled snow, even making repairs whenever she could. She took pride in her home, and it showed. Theresa was not only a devoted mother but also a trusted friend to her children. She was always there for them; someone they could turn to with any of life’s challenges. She taught them to be independent. Her warm and approachable nature made her easy to talk to and confide in. She made every holiday special with love and wonderful memories. From her beautifully decorated Christmas trees that could have won a prize, to her artistically caved pumpkins. She thoroughly enjoyed outings with her daughter to many Barry Manilow concerts, and memorable trips to Atlantic City and Cape May. A selfless woman, Theresa always ensured that everyone around her had what they needed before thinking of herself. She was a very patient, strong-willed woman, never one to cower or complain. She could also be quick-witted at times, always bringing laughter to those around her. Theresa had a naturally creative nature. She could sew curtains and clothing to perfection as well as complete oil paintings and elaborate paint-by-numbers kits from Germany. One of her paintings even earned her an award in a contest at the nursing home. When she wasn’t putting her artistic talents to use, Theresa could be found enjoying a good Mets game or admiring animals, especially cats. At one time, she was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, conducting historical research and preservation. Theresa was born and raised in the Catholic faith and was a long-time parishioner of St. Anthony and St. Agnes Church. Theresa is survived by her two cherished children and their loves, Susan Dawson and Walter Sudol, and Joseph Ambrose and Norma Borruso. She fondly remembered her brother who preceded her, Carl LaTray. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews, Rocco Ambrose, Joanne Ambrose, Celeste Ambrose, Michael Ambrose, and Caroline Ambrose; and special sister-in-law, Carol Ambrose. She was additionally predeceased by her son-in-law, Ronald Dawson; and her in-laws, Rocco and Angela Ambrose, and Dominick Ambrose; and a special friend Joe Brescia. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of the Masonic Care Community of NY for their devoted care, kindness and compassion during her stay there; Valley Residential Services for the wonderful care and kindness they showed Theresa; and Peggy, Cathy, and Kevin, who cared for Theresa as if she were their own family. In honoring Theresa’s wishes, at this time there will be no public services. Her family will honor and commemorate at their convenience.
