Baby Summer Rae Maclaury

WATERVILLE – Baby Summer Rae Maclaury passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at just 13 months old. Summer was born in Syracuse on January 18, 2024, the daughter of Dominick W. and Mackenzie R. (Carl) Maclaury. She was a fighter right from the start! Summer had a heart condition known as a hole in the heart, along with other heart-related issues. She underwent surgery two weeks after birth, followed by another surgery just two days later. She was placed on ECMO, a form of life support, and spent two months in the hospital. Upon returning home, she required an NG tube for feeding. Despite these challenges, Summer was a normal, happy baby, even celebrating her first birthday in January. On February 28, 2025, Summer had an operation to install a G-tube to assist with feeding, and she had to stay in the hospital due to issues with her oxygen levels. She showed signs of improvement until she vomited, which activated a nerve in her heart that was particularly sensitive due to her condition, causing her vitals to drop. The hospital staff performed CPR for 30 minutes, trying everything they could, but nothing worked and unfortunately Summer passed away. Everyone who knew her loved her and was deeply impressed by her strength and fortitude. Despite all the hardships her tiny little soul endured, she always had a beautiful smile on her face and shared her happiness with everyone around her. She was her mom’s little best friend. Summer enjoyed listening to music, playing with her toys, and spending time with her uncle Jacob and her cousins. Heaven’s newest little angel was baptized at St. John the Evangelist Church. Summer is survived by her beloved parents, Dominick and Mackenzie; maternal grandparents, Steven and Joann Carl; paternal grandparents, John Wilbur and Winnie Maclaury; aunts and uncles, Jenna and Matthew Cowburn, Shelby Plows (who was also her godmother) and her husband Jordan Plows; and Jacob Wilbur; paternal great-grandparents, Dan Sanders and Gal Wilbur; great-aunts and great-uncles, Lori and Jeff Farrell, Crystal Maclaury and her fiancé Steve Mills, and June and Derrick Preece; cousins, Everleigh Cowburn, Jayce Cowburn; Jackson Plows, Brantley Plows, Skyler Plows; Jessie Preece; and Dan and Bella Farrell; and her godfather, Sam Farrell. She was predeceased by her paternal great-grandparents Richard W. and Esther S. (Greene) Maclaury; maternal great-grandparents, John A. and Virginia M. (Mallozzi) Cecilia, and Thomas Carl and Ann Stone; and great-aunt, Patricia “Patty” Cecilia. The Maclaury family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Golisano Children’s Hospital in Rochester, especially Dr. Garrett Coles. Summer’s family will honor her memory privately.
