Salvatore L. DePellio

Mr. Salvatore L. DePellio, age 68, of Utica, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 16, 2009 at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center with his loving family by his side. Born in Utica on February 15, 1940, Salvatore was the son of the late Eugene and Elaine (Donato) DePellio. He was raised and educated locally and was a graduate of Utica Free Academy. On October 18, 1963 he married the former Pauline A. Trino who were true companions and devoted parents. Sal and Pauline felt blessed in their relationship and cherished the happy times. Sal’s career as a manager for the Grand Union Grocery Store spanned over 35 years. He was well-suited for the position and its responsibilities based on his hard work ethic and efficient, friendly manner in dealing with customers and employees. At home, he was a dependable and supportive father and grandpa. His wisdom and insight were often the reason for intuitive and heart-felt conversations with his grandchildren. He shared in the special occasions of his loved ones, and birthdays were so meaningful to him. In fact, the traditional celebration of Christmas Eve, family gatherings, and togetherness brought the most joy to his life. As a politically minded man, he followed documentaries that discussed political views and platforms and he was anxiously awaiting the inauguration of President-elect Obama. As a kind, generous spirit, he was one who knew how to serve others, and he easily formed many friendships and lasting relationships. His favorite social outlet was to gather at McDonalds to share conversation and company with his friends. In the baseball and football spheres, he was “Cleveland all the way”, supporting the Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Browns, respectively. Sal is survived by his wife, Pauline; his daughter and son-in-law, Gina A. and Jeffrey P. Jones of Utica; and his cherished grandchildren, Joseph L., Noel A., and Deanna M. Survivors also include his sister and brother-in-law, Lucille R. and Anthony Jardieu of Deerfield. He was preceded in death by his sister Deborah who passed away at the age of 8. He also leaves his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and sister-in-law, Joan Stuhlman. Sal was blessed with the loyalty and good fortune of many friends, especially acknowledging Anthony Sbarglia, Michael Alberico, Rich Zilocka, and Mark Joseph who was also his neighbor. He was predeceased by his niece, Joanne Stuhlman Callahan, and his longtime friend, Don Valenzano. The family is grateful to the Utica Fire Department and Rescue # 3 whose members responded with such compassion and dedication; the Emergency Room physicians and staff at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center for their competent care; and Dr. Jorge Ferreiro, who assisted Sal during a previous illness. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 3:00-6:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. By family request, please omit floral offerings. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Salvatore's Funeral Service and Celebration of Life which will commence on Wednesday evening at 6:00 at the funeral home immediately upon the conclusion of visitation with the Rev. John Rose officiating.
