Philip F. Capalupo

Mr. Philip F. Capalupo, of Utica, proud and grateful to have lived 90 years, passed away on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 with the support and love of his family. Born in Utica on April 19, 1918, Philip was the son of the late Peter and Mary (Christiano) Capalupo. He was raised in Utica and attended Utica Free Academy. On May 28, 1949 he married the former Gladys Chirillo with whom he shared 30 years in a union graced by mutual appreciation until her passing on July 4, 1979. Philip was a man motivated by a hard work ethic, and he devoted much energy to providing for his family. He was a civilian employee of Griffiss Air Force Base for many years, and upheld numerous responsibilities in affiliation with supplemental jobs during his working years as well. Philip loved and respected his family, a blessing which kept them united and truly devoted to him during his entire life. With his easy-going personality, he was rarely flustered, and he embraced his children, family, and extended family with such sincerity. He had the biggest heart, and will be remembered for his thoughtful and giving ways. It was the little things in life that Philip appreciated most, like crossword puzzles, and his knowledge of reading maps; he mastered the art of cooking and prepared an excellent mushroom stew. During his life, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the outdoors. One of his favorite pastimes was watching birds and the animals of nature. At home, his pets brought him much happiness, especially his black lab “Sunday”; they grew old together and he deeply missed his “girl” who passed away a year ago. He also came to love his feline “Sadie Jo”. He was a parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Church. Philip is survived by his daughters, Margaret M. Capalupo of New Hartford, and JoAnn Capalupo of Utica; his son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Barbara Capalupo of Highland, IL; and his grandchildren, Stephanie, Christopher, and Alexander Capalupo. Survivors also include his brother and sister-in-law, Angelo and Hattie Capalupo of Utica; his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and in-laws, Lucy Capalupo, Rose Chirillo, and Dorothy Johnson. He was predeceased by his brothers and sister-in-law, Ralph Capalupo, and Joseph and Ann Capalupo; his sister, Theresa; members of his wife’s family, the Chirillos; and his cousin and dearest friend, Joseph Christiano, with whom he shared many memorable occasions. The family sends a special thank-you to Philip’s brother, Angelo, who often visited, called, and offered many acts of kindness. Visitation will be held Friday (today) from 5:00-7:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Philip’s Mass of Christian Burial and Celebration of Life which will commence on Saturday morning at 10:30 at St. Anthony of Padua Church. For those wishing to do so, please consider memorial donations in Philip’s honor to a charity of choice; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
