Mrs. Norma A. (Abounader) Chanatry

UTICA - Mrs. Norma A. (Abounader) Chanatry, age 85, passed away on Friday, July 21, 2017 at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center with her loving family by her side. Born in Utica on September 30, 1931, Norma was the daughter of the late Shaheen and Alice (Moshaty) Abounader. She attended Brandegee Elementary School and graduated from T.R. Proctor High School. In subsequent years, she furthered her studies in Banking & Finance. In 1961 she married Louis Chanatry with whom she shared 12 years until his untimely passing. She continued to honor his memory for the rest of her life. At one time, Norma held a position as Branch Manager at Oneida National Bank at the New Hartford location. She later worked at Norstar Bank, a position she loved and honored for over 31 years, until her retirement. She was dedicated to her vocation and developed lasting relationships with her customers. As matriarch, Norma was loving, kind, and gentle, and she was devoted to her family and their needs. During her leisure time, she enjoyed having lunch at Cafe Del Buono and occasionally trying her luck at the casino with family and friends. As a parishioner of St. Louis Gonzaga Church, Norma was very faithful, devout, and always involved in various parish activities. Norma is survived by her sisters and brother-in-law, June T. Abounader of Utica, and Juliann and Joseph Ferris of Roswell, GA; many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and in-laws, Ronald Stamboly, Yvonne Doris and Eugene Hutchinson, Carol Chanatry, and Elizabeth Chanatry. She was predeceased by her sisters and brother-in-law, Agnes and Michael Fondario, and Donna Stamboly. The family is grateful to the nurses at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center for the care and compassion they provided for Norma. In keeping with Norma's wishes, there will be no public visitation. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Norma’s funeral service and Celebration of Life which will commence on Tuesday morning at 10:00 at St. Louis Gonzaga Church where her Divine Liturgy of the Faithful Departed will be offered by Chorbishop John D. Faris. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of the Mass. Those wishing to express an act of kindness in lieu of flowers may make a contribution to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or St. Louis Gonzaga Church; envelopes will be available at the service. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
