Mrs. Nancy (Poccia) Zinicola

Mrs. Nancy (Poccia) Zinicola, age 89, of New Hartford, passed away on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at the Masonic Care Community of NY. Born in Utica on March 24, 1921, Nancy was the daughter of the late Antonio and Alvera “Irene” (Napoli) Poccia. Raised and educated locally, she graduated from T.R. Proctor High School in 1939. She then attended the Utica School of Commerce graduating with an Associates Degree in Business. At one time she was married to the late Silvio J. Zinicola. For more than 30 years, Nancy worked as a medical secretary for Dr. Andrew Johnston, the position from which she retired in 1986. She was also formerly employed as an instructor at Mohawk Valley Community College. Above all else, Nancy’s son and his family were everything to her. They made her life complete and brought her great happiness, especially in her later years. Motivated to help others, Nancy was a volunteer at Faxton Hospital. She was also a patron of the fine arts, active with the Utica Symphony organization and the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute. She was a communicant of St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church and a member of the Christ Child Society. Nancy is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Silvio J. and Janice Zinicola of Gainesville, VA; her grandchildren, Nina and Nathan Smith, and Todd Zinicola, all of VA; and her great grandchildren, Samuel Smith, and Amelia Smith. Survivors also include her brother, Anthony C. Poccia, Jr., of Utica; her many nieces and nephews, including Cathy and Michael DeVine of Endicott, John, Jr. and Barbara Poccia, and Debbie Poccia, all of Utica; and several great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her brother, John Poccia; her nephew, Anthony Poccia; and her sister-in-law, Sara Poccia. Nancy’s family will honor and celebrate her life in a private gathering. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her funeral service and Celebration of Life which will commence on Saturday morning at 10:00 at St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church where her Mass of Christian Burial which will be offered by Rev. Anthony P. LaFache. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of the services. Entombment will take place in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum at the convenience of the family.
