Lydia J. (DeCarlo) Campola

Mrs. Lydia J. (DeCarlo) Campola, age 86, of Utica, passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at the St. Joseph Nursing Home with her loving family by her side. Born in Utica on January 24, 1923, Lydia was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Grace (Giannini) DeCarlo. Raised and educated locally, she was a 1941 graduate of T. R. Proctor High School. On January 3, 1944 she married Patsy S. “Pat” Campola with whom she shared 43 years prior to his passing on April 13, 1987. At one time, Lydia worked as a hair stylist. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Lydia treasured her loved ones above all else, and she will be remembered for her devotion to them. A woman of faith, she studied scripture and Catholic teachings with her friend Rosemary Chiffy, and she served as a spokesperson for her Bible group. She was a member of the North Utica Senior Center and a devout parishioner of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish. Lydia is survived by her daughter and primary caregiver for the past several years, Sharon Lee Campola of New York Mills; her sons and daughters-in-law, Roland and Sharon A. Campola of FL, Patsy S. and Maureen Campola of FL, and David Sr. and Kathy Campola of N. Utica; her grandchildren, Michelle and Bill Piotrowski, David, Jr. and Michele Campola, Christopher Campola, and June Campola; and her great-grandchildren, Anthony, Sophia and Charlotte. Survivors also include her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, special cousins, JoJo and Robert Gentile, Candy and Joe Gazzal, and Tickie Champion; in-laws, Frieda Campola, Josephine Campola, Rose Campola and Vincent Grasso; and many wonderful friends especially Rosanne Bravo who was like a second daughter to Lydia. She was predeceased by her sisters, Lena and Ken Stathes, and Faye and Louis Migliaccio; and her brothers, Louis "Shoey" and Carmella DeCarlo, Edmund and Josephine DeCarlo, and Roland DeCarlo; in-laws, Frank and Angie Campola, Dick and Josephine Robertello, Joe and Lucy Berliski, Angelo Campola, Tony Campola, Sam Campola, Lena Grasso and Marian Trent. The family wishes to thank the entire staff of the St. Joseph Nursing Home and her special aides from the 2nd floor for the loving care she received while there. In keeping with Lydia’s wishes, there will be no public visitation. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial and Celebration of Life which will commence on Tuesday morning at 11:30 at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of the Mass. Entombment will take place in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum at the convenience of the family.
