Laura (Orlando) DeRosa

Mrs. Laura (Orlando) DeRosa, age 92, passed away on Friday, August 9, 2013 in the comfort of her home with her loving family by her side. Born in Utica on September 13, 1920, Laura was the daughter of the late Orbano and Petrina (Scianna) Orlando. Raised and educated locally, she was a graduate of T.R. Proctor High School. She furthered her studies at the St. Luke’s School of Nursing where she received her diploma as a Registered Nurse. On July 26, 1943 she married Dominick A. “Doc” DeRosa; the couple shared 62 years in a loving matrimonial union of mind and heart up until his passing on January 25, 2006. At one time, Laura held a position as a Charge Nurse at the former Faxton Children’s Hospital, retiring in 1983. Laura was very much respected and loved by her co-workers and patients in her care. As the matriarch of her household, her love and energy were devoted to her dear family whom she adored. She was the heart and soul of the family. Laura enjoyed spending time in her home. She was a fantastic cook and took pride in meticulously making a warm and welcoming environment. She was a parishioner of St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church. Laura is survived by her daughters and sons-in-laws, Patricia “Patty” and Richard L. Connolly of Utica, Mary and John Wolf of Chittenango, and Linda and Robert Kula of Yorkville; her son and daughter-in-law, Nicholas A. “Nick” and Donna DeRosa of Deerfield; her grandchildren, Terry Currier, Tammy Schwahn, Tim Currier, Andrew Wolf, Renee and Travis Collingwood, Kristen Wolf, Alicia Wolf, Jennifer Wolf, Shannon Kula, Shawn Kula, Cheryl DeRosa and her mother Patricia DeRosa; Jason and Joanna Niedzielski, Mark Niedzielski, and Casimir Niedzielski; her great-grandchildren, Christopher and fiancée Pesla, Richard, Shayna, Chelsea, Briana, and Ava; and her great-great-grandchild, Olivia. She also leaves generations of nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Rose and Joseph “Jigger” LaPorte; and her great-grandson, Edan Wolf. Laura’s family extends a special thanks to the staff of St. Elizabeth’s Hospital 3A Unit for the care and compassion they provided during her extended stay and to her Hospice team who helped give dignity to her final days. The family will honor and commemorate Laura’s life in a private gathering. By family request, please omit floral offerings. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Laura's funeral service and Celebration of Life which will commence on Monday afternoon at 1:00 at St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church where her Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Rev. Mark Kaminski. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of the Mass. Interment will take place in St. Agnes Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
