Joseph M. Salatino

Mr. Joseph M. Salatino, age 79, of Utica, passed away on Saturday, April 29, 2006 at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center. Born in Utica on January 12, 1927, Joseph was the son of the late Anthony “Tony” and Rose (Pendolf) Salatino. He was raised here and attended local schools. A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy at Guam and in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Since 1970 he has shared a wonderful marriage and a happy life with the former Sandra Ruehl-Goss. Joseph and Sandy have been a perfect team throughout their relationship, always standing by each other’s side to share countless good times and to offer support whenever needed. At one time Mr. Salatino was employed as a warehouseman at GAFB. He then accepted a position with the Utica City School District, serving on the maintenance staff at Proctor High School. Gifted with an easy-going and likeable personality, Joe enjoyed social situations with his family and friends, such as leisurely “nights-out” with his wife or getting together with his “coffee buddies.” His favorite pastimes included fishing, bowling, and taking day trips. He also enjoyed any activity that took him outdoors during the summer months. He loved to cook and took special pleasure in preparing dinner for his wife. He was a communicant of St. Agnes Church and a member of the Marcy Post of the American Legion. Mr. Salatino is survived by his wife, Sandy; a daughter; a son; a stepdaughter; and 2 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Jennie Jones of Clinton, and Dolores Citriniti of Utica; his sister-in-law, Mary Jane Salatino of Utica; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins; his mother-in-law, Ida Schmidt; and his in-laws, Linda and Frank Spatto of Mohawk and Sharon and Ron Chavers of MD. In addition he was blessed with many friends who will miss him very much. Joseph was predeceased by an infant sister, Anna Salatino; his siblings and their spouses, Angela Marie and Peter Caruso, Vincent “Jim” Salatino, Rose and Joseph Anthony Joseph, and Anna Marie Salatino; and his brothers-in-law, John A. Citriniti, Sr. and Sherman Jones. The family offers its sincere thanks to the nursing staff of the 6th floor at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center who demonstrated the comfort and support of their love, compassion, and regard to both Joe and Sandy during his extended stay in their care, as well as to Dr. Pachikara, Dr. Margarita Perez-Cheron, and Dr. Ira Tisch. Visitation will be held today (Tuesday) from 4-7 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. By family request, please omit floral offerings. Mr. Salatino’s funeral will commence at the funeral home this evening at 7:00 immediately upon the conclusion of calling hours; Msgr. Francis Willenburg will officiate. Interment will take place in St. Agnes Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
