Mr. Herman L. Hearns Jr.

Mr. Herman Lewis Hearns, Jr., age 54, passed away on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center with his family by his side. Born in Tampa, Florida on October 10, 1961, Herman was the son of the late Herman, Sr. and Gloris (Gardner) Hearns. He was raised and educated in Landover, Maryland. A proud veteran of the United States Army, he honorably served his country during his tour of duty until 1978. In 1983, he relocated to the Utica area. He was blessed with a loving relationship with Theresa Wynder and from that union came the blessing of 2 daughters. At one time, Herman worked as a mechanic for Sears. He was also employed by various local eateries where he offered his talents in their kitchens. A loving and caring father, Herman’s primary goal was tending to the needs of his children and loved ones. He enjoyed cooking and his delicious cuisine made many family members smile — many times! Herman had a unique sense of humor, and his loving presence made a lasting impression on everyone he met. Herman is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Shamiya J. and Justin L. Phillips, Tarieta and Richard Williams, and Taicoya S. and Shawn Tillery, all of Utica; and Gloris Hearns of Maryland. He treasured the memory of his daughter, Iyana Hearns, who passed away in 2001. He also leaves his son and daughter-in-law, Jermaine and Vonya Edwards of Maryland; his grandchildren, Taj’mere Phillips, Ja’Quell Phillips, Jayden Phillips, Ty’Nia Edwards, Talea’ Sarjou, Ta’Nea Sarjou, Anthony Willis Jr., A’Kyrah Tillery, and LaShawn Tillery Jr. He will also be remembered by his sister, Anitra Gardner of Maryland; his brother, Victor McRae of Utica; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, extended family, and his friend, Harold “Nick” Jones. The family wishes to acknowledge Erin Callahan, Toya Hunter, and Carmelita Wynder for the loving care and support they provided to Herman and his family through the years. Visitation will be held Saturday from 3:30-5:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Elder Marcel Bembry will offer a talk immediately upon conclusion of visitation. Interment will take place in Forest Hill Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
