Gemal S. (Shamoun) Yaghy

Mrs. Gemal S. (Shamoun) Yaghy, age 94, currently a resident of Willow Park in Utica, passed away after a brief illness on Saturday, September 8, 2007 at the Siegenthaler Center with the comfort of her loving family by her side. Born in New York Mills on May 4, 1913, Gemal was the daughter of the late Louis and Mary (Kalil) Shamoun. She was raised and educated locally. On January 8, 1934 she married Joseph M. “Hindu” Yaghy with whom she shared a loving union of 49 years until his passing on February 8, 1983. During her working years, Gemal held positions in knitting mills throughout the area. She also assisted her husband in the operation of Hindu’s Bleecker St. Market for many years. As a loving and hard working homemaker, baker, and cook, Gemal was firmly devoted to her family’s life and well being. At one time she was a member of the St. Mary’s Guild of St. Louis Gonzaga Church. Gemal is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Rocco N. Spatuzzi of Florida; and her daughter-in-law, Donna L. Yaghy of Utica. She held close to her heart the memory of her son Joseph M. Yaghy who passed away on May 24, 2001. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Roxanne and Ken Roser, Lisa and Vincent Militano, Jr., Renee and Andrew Florentino, Joseph T. Yaghy, Denise and Carmen Pimpinella, and Brian M. and Nicole Yaghy; her great-grandchildren; Grant and Lisa Roser, Ryan Roser, Vincent Militano, Rocco Militano, Erika Lumbrazo, Danielle Florentino, Jennifer Florentino, Carmen J. Pimpinella, Alexis Pimpinella, Brianna Yaghy, and Joseph and Isabella Grace Yaghy; her sister, Dorothy McAfee of Greenville, Mississippi; her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and in-laws, Fay and Hank Dimitri, Emily Valencourt, Jennie Stabile, Martha Ellis, and Margaret Yaghy. She was predeceased by her siblings, including her sister, Adele Shadeed; and her brother, James Shamoun. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the entire staff of the Willow Park Assisted Living Facility for their dedicated care. Visitation will be held Monday (today) from 5:00-7:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. By family request, please omit floral offerings. Gemal’s funeral service will commence on Tuesday morning at 9:00 from the funeral home and at 10:00 at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery.
