Mrs. Evelyn P.(Laymon) Nelson

Mrs. Evelyn P. (Laymon) Nelson, age 78, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 5, 2013 at the Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare Center with her loving family by her side. Born in Cooperstown, NY on February 27, 1935, Evelyn was the daughter of the late Earl and Julia (Wilsey) Laymon. She was raised and educated in Richfield Springs, attending their local high school. On September 23, 1955 she married Robert L. Nelson, Sr. with whom she shared 32 years maintaining a relationship that was focused on loyalty and family. Robert passed away on March 16, 1988. Evelyn was an avid homemaker, mother, and matriarch who ingrained family values and traditions to her children. After her children were grown, Evelyn helped others to care for their homes as well as being employed by U.S. Care. A woman who spoke her mind, she was admired by others for her honest nature. Her family always came first, a value lesson she learned from caring for the needs of her son, David. And if she was your friend, you had a friend for life. Her special accomplishment in life was the blessing of a family of whom she was so proud. Family get-togethers and holidays were fun-filled and memorable for Evelyn. A skilled bowler, she was very handy on the hardwoods at The Royal, The Madison, and the Pin-O-Rama bowling alleys and was a member of several leagues. She was of the Protestant faith. Evelyn is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Georgina and David Kitchen of N. Utica; her sons and daughters-in-law, Robert L. Nelson, Jr. of Utica, Michael and Marsha Nelson of Richfield Springs, David "Bear" Nelson of Utica, and Steven "Hook" Nelson and Kathy Hanna of Chadwicks. Always close to her heart was the memory of her son, Mark Nelson, who preceded her in death. She also leaves her grandchildren, John Scofield, Earl and Jennifer Scofield; Anthony Blohm; Tina Marie Nelson and her husband; Steven Recore; Matthew Nelson; Michael Nelson, and David Nelson, Jr.; and her 7 great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by her many nieces, and nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and in-laws, Dorothy Laymon, Nellis and Janice Nelson, Rosie Nelson, and Norma and George Picente. She was predeceased by 2 sisters and 4 brothers. The family is thankful the the exceptional care and compassion rendered to Evelyn by Dr. Samir Desai, NP Windy Mitchell, Dr. John Crawford, the personnel of the Visiting Nurse Association, and the staff of the 2nd Floor Allen Calder Wing at the Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare Center, during such a difficult and trying time. Visitation will be held Sunday from 4:00-6:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. By family request, please refrain from flowers. At the conclusion of visitation, blessings will be conferred upon her life. Interment will take place in Frankfort Center Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
