Edythe A. Mariani

Edythe A. Mariani, age 95, currently of Van Dyne Home and Hospital, Syracuse and formerly of Utica, passed away on Tuesday, January 3, 2012. Edythe was born in Utica on June 3, 1916, the daughter of the late Joseph and Filomena (D’Aprano) Mariani. Raised and educated locally, she attended Utica Free Academy. During World War II, Edie began her working career at Griffiss Air Force Base. She subsequently operated the franchise Sports Service, a catering business for sports arenas. She was a striking woman, ahead of her time, and a sharp businesswoman who broke the “glass ceiling” in the 1930’s. She managed multiple concessions and vending operations associated with the Phillies and the Utica Blue Sox. Edie’s next venture in the workplace was her employment as a paralegal for several law firms including Goldbas & Goldbas where she truly was the “office”. Lastly, she held a part time job at St. Luke’s Hospital as a Ward Clerk in the Emergency Room and the Intensive Care Unit, the position from which she retired. Edythe was motivated to take on the many responsibilities of helping her family through her expertise and guidance. She was generous with her wisdom and financial support for her growing extended family, and her generosity was one of many ways she ensured the family’s wellbeing. Pastimes during her later years included solving crossword puzzles and knitting. Edie is survived by her sister, Lucy Tozzi of CA; nephews and nieces, Joseph and Marianne Wormworth and their son Joseph T., James Wormworth, Dominick and Camille Mariani, Joseph and Jackie Mariani, Teresa and Michael Lonergan, Allie and Mary Baker, Michael and Melissa Tozzi, Phyllis and Tony Angelo, Lauren Tozzi, Lawrence and Holly Tozzi, Denise and Paul Skeeter, several great nieces and nephews. and her sister-in-law, Anna Mariani. She was predeceased by her brothers and sister-in-law, Dominick A. “Dick” Mariani, Louis "John” Mariani, and Alfred and Dorothy Mariani; her sisters and brother-in-law, Anne Mariani and brother-In-Law, James Wormworth, and Mary and Alfred H. Baker, Sr.; her nephew, Mark Mariani; and her brother-in-law, Lawrence Tozzi Sr. Visitation will be held Friday from 4:00-7:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., Utica, NY 13501. (315-724-6714) Edythe’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence on Saturday morning at 9:30 at the funeral home offered by Fr. John Buehler. Committal prayers and interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
