Dr. Samuel T. Rubino

Dr. Samuel T. Rubino, age 86, of Utica, a well-known and respected area physician, passed away on Monday, July 14, 2008 at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center with his loving family by his side. Born in Utica on June 1, 1922, Samuel was the son of the late Thomas and Angeline (Bruno) Rubino. Raised and educated locally, he was a graduate of T. R. Proctor High School. He pursued his college studies at Niagara University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He then began his medical education at Georgetown University where he was awarded his Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1947, graduating with honors. He met the requirements of his internship at Newark Wayne Community Hospital in New Jersey specializing in Internal Medicine. A proud veteran of the U. S. Army, he honorably served as a physician with a mobile army surgical hospital (MASH) unit during the Korean Conflict, obtaining the rank of Captain. At one time, he was married to the former Patricia “Bunny” Loftis, and to this relationship came the blessings of his 3 daughters. Patricia passed away in 1993. Sam began his medical practice in 1949 in association with the late Dr. Charles Greene. He subsequently established himself in private practice with offices on Hopper St., Genesee St., and most notably, his Eagle St. office. As a physician, he shared a kinship with his patients, and a profound dedication and ability to embrace their needs. He will be remembered for his compassion, humility, and empathy which were paramount in his practice. He held a true passion for medicine and a deep respect for his fellow physicians. During his professional career, he received numerous awards, highlighted by his recognition as the first physician to receive the Extra Mile Award at St. Luke's Hospital in 1977. This award acknowledged his outstanding dedication to St. Luke's Hospital and the rapport he shared with administrators, staff, and patients. He was also the recipient of the Central N.Y. Academy of Medicine Humanitarian Award in 1998. His professional affiliations included American Medical Association, the New York State Medical Society, and the Oneida County Medical Society. He was a true humanitarian; a man of character and honesty. He knew the rewards of his chosen profession and was proud and privileged to have served his patients in this community for nearly 60 years. Sam was blessed with a second union of great support and companionship when he married the former Carrie Butera who preceded him in passing. He was a patron of the Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute, and a supporter of local arts and the Stanley Theatre and Performing Arts Center. Much happiness and years of mutual devotion were spent with his wife, the former Ann (Reichl) Rondinelli and she was fondly remembered since her passing in 2000. Always alert and academic, Dr. Rubino kept current of clinical advances and procedures through his avid reading of medical journals. In the sporting world, he was a boastful Boston Red Sox fan! Sam was a father admired by his children. They were proud of his accomplishments and honors, and the sharp mind which he maintained until the moment of his passing. But above all, his children were most proud of his loyalty to family and his fatherly values. One of his finest attributes was that he maintained love and respect for the mother of his children throughout his life. Dr. Rubino is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Michael Russo of Medina, Ohio, Mary Jane Lathwood of Utica and Michael Lathwood, and Judy Rubino of Sauquoit; and his grandson, Michael Samuel Lathwood. Sam was also blessed with the love and companionship of his fiancée, Emily Testa. Survivors also include his cousins, especially acknowledging Flora De Fazio, and Josephine Scarfo. The family extends heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Mark E. Blaker, and Dr. Dilip D. Kachare for their care and compassion while tending to Dr. Rubino. Special thanks are offered to Joan Boucher, his medical secretary, for 38 years of dedicated and loyal service; and Rev. Anthony LaFache for his prayers and encouragement. In keeping with Dr. Rubino's wises, there will be no public visitation. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Dr. Rubino’s Mass of Christian Burial and Celebration of Life which will commence on Saturday morning at 11:00 at St. Anthony of Padua Church with the Rev. Anthony P. LaFache officiating. Military Honors will be conferred, and the family will receive visitors at the conclusion of the Mass. Entombment will take place in the family’s private mausoleum in Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
