Mrs. Dorothy L. (Quarterman) Smith

UTICA - Mrs. Dorothy L. (Quarterman) Smith, age 76, went home to the Lord when she passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center. Born in Louisville, Georgia on February 17 1941, Dorothy was the daughter of the late Louise (Bostick) Thomas & George Quarterman. She also knew the parental love of the late Dr. Lawrence Thomas, DDS. She was raised and educated in Binghamton NY, and pursued her studies at Broome Community College to become a nurse. She then relocated to Utica, NY to attend the St. Elizabeth’s College of Nursing where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree and her license as a Registered Professional Nurse. She shared a loving 40-year union with Willie D. Smith, Sr. They had many common interests and truly complemented and balanced one another. Dorothy began her nursing career at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center in the Emergency Room, and later worked at the Utica Psychiatric Center. Lastly, she held a nursing position at the Marcy Correctional Facility, where she retired in 2003. Because Dorothy was a natural caretaker, it was fitting for her to excel in her chosen profession as a Registered Nurse. Dorothy generously graced her family with love and was loved, in turn, by her family and many close friends. She was a talented cook, offering her skill and time to raise funds for charitable concerns. She and her husband were dedicated to charity, truth, and loving kindness. They were active members of the Cornhill Fish & Game Club and enjoyed fishing and bowling. Dorothy was a devoted member of the Order of the Eastern Star/Starlight Chapter #6, where she held the office of Worthy Matron for several years. When time allowed, she enjoyed trips to entertaining establishments where she could try her luck at games of chance with her close friends who were considered as family. Dorothy is survived by her husband, Willie D. Smith; her daughter, TerriLyn Quarterman-Maye and her husband Cornell Maye of NC; her son, Jerome Quarterman of Binghamton who was preceded by his wife Ann Quarterman, her step-children and their loves, Willie D. “Dino” and Jackie Smith of Utica, Kathy Smith, Dorothy Brown, Tony Smith, Terry Smith, Veronica Chestnut, Randall Smith, and Tiresha Smith, all of Florida. She was predeceased by her step-son Darron Smith who passed in 2004. She also leaves a large host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her half-sisters and brother-in-law, Johnnie and William Heck and Mamie Quarterman, all of GA; her sister-in-law, Colista Quarterman; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, with special mention of Rosa Moore of Churchville, NY, who shared a bond of sisterhood with Dorothy; and her many cherished friendships. She was predeceased by her brothers, George Quarterman, and Robert Quarterman. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 3:00-4:00 p.m. at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Dorothy’s funeral service and Home Going Celebration will commence on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 at the funeral home immediately upon conclusion of visitation with Rev. George Clark officiating the ceremony. Inurnment will take place at Forest Hill Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
