Mrs. Doris E. (Burton) Washington

Mrs. Doris E. (Burton) Washington, age 74, of Utica, passed away on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center with the love and support of her family by her side. Born in Chicago, Illinois on June 13, 1936, Doris received her primary and secondary education there. After graduation, she enrolled in college where she specialized in nursing, earning her Registered Nurse status. After college, she married Sidney Washington who passed away on February 1, 2002; they were committed to one another, truly understanding each other’s needs and focusing on raising their family. Doris began working in her nursing profession at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York City. She then moved to Utica where she continued her nursing career at St. Elizabeth Medical Center as an R.N., the position from which she retired. Doris was a diligent worker and a generous woman, and her door was always open to anyone for a conversation or a meal. She could be seen on the front porch keeping a watchful eye on the neighborhood, always willing to help anyone in need. She loved her Bingo games, especially at the Sons of Italy Lodge, and her good times and trips with the Cornhill Senior Center. She held the most pride for her loving family and as a social woman, she cherished the friendships she formed over the years. She was a parishioner of The Salvation Army Church. Doris is survived by her daughters, Dolores Washington of Utica with whom she resided, and Denise Plumber-Roberts of FL; her sons and daughter-in-law, Sidney Washington and fiancée Jill Harvey, Lance Washington, and Kenneth and Jeannie Washington, all of Utica; her grandchildren, Tiffany, Harmonica, Bethany; Lashandira, Winston; Jessica, David; Shondel, Lasheena, Tomia, Nicole, Angelina; Leona, Kenneth, Jr., Lee, Patricia, Robbie, and Nyasia; and her 7 great-grandchildren. Survivors also include her sisters and brothers of Illinois; and many special relatives who will not be forgotten. The family is grateful to the St. Elizabeth Medical Center Emergency Room for their efforts and attentiveness in caring for Doris at her time of need. Visitation will be held on Saturday afternoon from 2:30-4:30 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Doris’ Home Going Celebration service will commence on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 at the funeral home immediately upon conclusion of visitation with Capt. Frank, Pastor officiating.
