Charles A. "Charlie" DiGeorgio

Mr. Charles A. “Charlie” DiGeorgio, age 74, of Frankfort, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 with his loving wife at his side. Born in Utica on July 10, 1937, Charles was the son of the late Giacindo “Jack” and Teresa E. (Coriale) DiGiorgio. He was raised and educated in Utica. On November 26, 1955 he married the former Margaret “Peggy” Berrus with whom he shared 56 years; Charlie and Peggy supported each other, made decisions together, and dedicated their lives to the happiness and well-being of their family. In 1965 Charlie and his family relocated to Frankfort. Charlie was employed by the New York State Department of Transportation for 37 years and upon his retirement he established and operated DiGeorgio Enterprises where he continued his work and love for automobiles. He was blessed with an excellent work ethic and had a natural mechanical inclination. He was an industrious man with a variety of occupational talents. He was adept in the operation of machines and tools of the trade, and he was professional, honest, and organized in his line of work. Charlie also valued his community and was generous with his time, talents, and charitable donations. He would go out of his way to help you anytime, anywhere. Charlie was also known to be vocal about what he deemed to be “right” and his fair-minded sense of justice. As a father, he held equality and fairness paramount, and he took pride in teaching his children his down-to-earth endeavors and expertise he acquired during his life, including gardening, farming, hunting, construction, and mechanics. He enjoyed holiday dinners and gatherings with the family all together, and was so proud of his classic antique car collection. At one time, he was an enthusiast of Black Powder Rifles. In looking back on his life, Charlie was a good man of true character and generous to a fault. Charlie is survived by his wife, Margaret “Peggy”; his children and their spouses, Charles “Chuck” DiGeorgio, Jr. and fiancée Barbara Higgins of Ilion, Mark and Jacqueline DiGeorgio of Herkimer, Patty and David Bower, Michael and Paula DiGeorgio, and Lorraine “Lorie” Gonyea and fiancé Sal Sgroi, all of Frankfort, and “Chipper”, who he loved like a son, and Donna Pugliese of Herkimer. Always close to his heart was the memory of his son, Patrick H. “Pat” DiGeorgio, who passed away on November 9, 2010. He also leaves his 13 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren, with one on-the-way. Also left to mourn his passing are his sisters and brother-in-law, Marguerite “Marge” Miller of Whitesboro, and Carmelita A. and John H. “Jack” Armstrong of FL; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, sister-in-law, Elizabeth Walters of Lowville; and the many friendships he cherished over his lifetime. He was predeceased by his sister, Jacqueline Lingle; brother-in-law, Robert G. Miller; and several in-laws. The family is grateful to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the University of Maryland Medical Center and the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center; and Dr. Sudershan Dang who worked so hard in caring for Charlie’s family. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4-7 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Charlie’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence on Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the funeral home with Deacon James Bower officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Herkimer.
