Bernadette A. Roy

NEW HARTFORD – A beautiful and wonderful sister, Bernadette A. Roy, age 88, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, and was reunited with her Pop, Mommy, and brother, Richard. Born in Utica on December 28, 1937, Bernadette was the only daughter of the late Edward L. and Anna A. (Ruffule) Roy. She attended St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Elementary School and went on to graduate from Utica Catholic Academy on John Street. At one time, she shared many happy memories with Anthony Mitchell. She began her career in the banking industry with employment at Oneida National Bank. A loyal woman, she was a successful representative who remained at the same location on Genesee Street and saw the bank through many ups and downs, as well as changes in ownership. Her loyalty shone through again when she retired earlier than she had hoped in order to care for the needs of her mother. Her family was the main focus of her existence. Indeed, her whole world revolved around her loved ones. She was blessed with a selfless nature and would go out of her way to help those in need. She had a wonderful personality that drew all the neighborhood children to befriend her. She also took great pride in her appearance and always made sure to put her best foot forward. A woman with a feisty spirit and a taste for fun, she loved her trips to Atlantic City and visits to Vernon Downs Casino, where she was well recognized and affectionately called “Bernie.” When at home with some time to herself, she enjoyed watching “Days of Our Lives.” Above all, Bernadette was deeply devoted to the Blessed Mother and held wonderfully fond memories of her pilgrimage to Lourdes, France. She was actively involved in her church, St. Louis Gonzaga, and was a member of St. Joseph’s Society and St. Mary’s Guild. Bernadette is survived by her brother, Francis T. Roy and his sweetheart Kathy Countryman. During her life, she fondly remembered her brother, Richard E. Roy, who passed away in 1992. She also leaves behind many cousins and was so proud of her godchildren, Francesca Bevivino and Gino Cieslak. She will additionally be missed by members of the Saba, Ruffule, Raffule, Sciortino, and Mariano families; and many special friends; neighbors, the DiPierro family, the Giordano family, and the Scalzo family who loved and cared about her. The Roy family would like to thank the many nurses and aides who assisted Bernadette for their care and compassion. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Bernadette’s funeral service and Celebration of Life, which will commence on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Louis Gonzaga Church, 520 Rutger St., Utica, NY, where the Divine Liturgy of the Faithful Departed will be celebrated by Fr. Boutros El Hachem. There will be an opportunity to greet the family at the conclusion of the service. There will be a mercy luncheon to follow in the church auditorium. Entombment will take place in Calvary Mausoleum.
