Arden C. (Saltrella) Atkins

Mrs. Arden C. (Saltrelli) Atkins, age 75, formerly of Utica and currently residing in Clinton, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at the Katherine Luther Home. Born in Saranac, NY on May 19, 1932, Arden was the daughter of the late William and Thelma (Deming) Saltrelli. She was raised and educated in Utica. At one time she was married to John N. Bello who passed away on March 16, 2000. On October 11, 1980 she wed William “Wild Bill” Atkins who passed away on November 4, 1986. A licensed beautician and hairdresser for many years, Arden was the owner and operator of Arden’s Checkmate on Oneida St. More recently, she was involved in the ownership and operation of the Steaks, Eggs, & Greens Restaurant, an establishment she committed herself to operating following her husband’s passing. Through her good business practices and gracious rapport with her patrons, she forged many wonderful friendships and lasting relationships. Determined and independent by nature, she was also a fun-loving and vivacious woman. As a very devoted grandmother, she adored her grandchildren. During her spare time, she expressed her creative talents through art, especially painting. She was of the Catholic faith. Arden is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Greg R. and Elizabeth Bello of New Hartford, and John and Ardella “DeeDee” Bello of Weedsport, NY; and her grandchildren, Gregory John Bello of New Hartford, Kaitlyn Michelle Bello of Weedsport, and Brian Moore of Auburn. Survivors also include her sister, Mary Dunbar of Clinton, NY who assisted her sister with loving care and with whom she shared a special bond; her brother and sister-in-law, Martin and Kathy Gallagher of CA; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and in-laws. She was predeceased by her sister, Phyllis Gallagher. The family extends thanks to the entire staff of the Katherine Luther Home for their care and compassion, and Dr. Thomas John, Arden’s physician, for his support and professionalism. In keeping with Arden’s wishes, there will be no public visitation. By family request, please omit floral offerings. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated on Wednesday morning at 10:00 at Historic Old St. John’s Church. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of the service. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave.
