Anna M. (Sardina) Castelli

Mrs. Anna M. (Sardina) Castelli, age 92, of Utica, passed away on Monday, January 18, 2010 in the comfort and privacy of her home with her loving family by her side. Born in Utica on April 8, 1917, Anna was the daughter of the late Paul and Sarah (Tomaselli) Sardina. She was raised and educated in Utica and attended local schools. On April 6, 1940 she married Angelo R. Castelli with whom she shared 69 years of her life; their relationship was blessed with love and devotion. Her beloved Angelo passed away on August 5, 2009. During her working days, Anna held a position with the Oneita Knitting Mills and later with Univac, the position from which she retired. A talented craftswoman, she was especially gifted in sewing, knitting, and crocheting, and enjoyed sharing her handmade articles with love. She was a member of the West Side Senior Center, the North Utica Community Center, and the former East Side Senior Center. She was a communicant of St. Anthony and St. Agnes Church and a member of its Altar Rosary Society. Anna is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Mindy and Fred Garner of Sun City, AZ, Dorothea C. Smothers of New York Mills, Paula A. Fontaine of Whitesboro, and Angela M. Durrigan of Utica. Always close to her heart was the memory of Anna’s son-in-law, Gary Fontaine, who passed away on June 18, 2009. In addition, she leaves her grandchildren, Janet and Jimmy McCarter, Garrett and Suzanne Garner, Michael Garner, Becky Moran, Kristina Fiorini and Brian Listovitch, Gary R. Fontaine, Jr., Melissa Durrigan and Joe Green, and Gina and Adam Pinkos. Survivors also include her 10 great-grandchildren; her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and in-laws, Kate Sardina of New Hartford, Rose Mozzetti of Utica, and Josephine and Enrico Cecilia of Whitesboro. She was predeceased by her infant son, Michael; her granddaughter, Lisa Ann; sisters, Frances Biancardi, Catherine Dacquino, Domenica Ciccone, and Mary DiNardi; and her brothers, Sam Sardina, Joseph Sardina, and Anthony Sardina. The family is grateful to the entire staff of Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., especially acknowledging Navez, for her special care and concern. Visitation will be held Wednesday (today) from 4:00-7:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. By family request, please omit floral offerings. For those wishing to do so, please consider memorial donations in Anna’s honor to Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc.; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Anna’s funeral service will commence on Thursday morning at 9:30 from the funeral home and at 10:30 at St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery.
