January 1, 1960 - January 9, 2020
UTICA - Mr. Suk Bahadur Tamang, age 60, went home to the Lord when he passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2020. Born in Bhutan on January 1, 1960, Suk received his education and lived in his home land for his formative years. He was the caretaker of the King of Bhutan’s elephant, and he also helped and guided people crossing the river. In searching for a better life for not only himself but his family, they migrated to Nepal where he began another venture in his life. While living in Nepal, Suk worked tirelessly as a carpenter and porter, traveling up the mountainsides while carrying logs on his back. Never disagreeable or rude, he had a kind and honest personality. In the context of refugee life, Suk assimilated and worked hard to provide for his family and loved ones, especially his children in the hopes that they could persevere and obtain blessings. Suk was strong willed in overcoming such trials and tribulations, which made him a remarkable man,… and he prevailed. He was also a phenomenal father to his children, and he loved spending time with his grandkids. He enjoyed dancing to old folk songs and spending time with his Nepali community. The struggles that Suk endured while journeying to America enabled his family members the freedom to recognize their own identities. It was in 2017 that he immigrated to the United States and settled in Utica to be closer to those he loved. He embraced and engaged his old world Nepal culture with his new world. He practiced the religion of his Nepali Community whose members congregated at the Zion Lutheran Church. Suk is survived by his children and their loved ones, Pardep Tamang, Pinkey Tamang, Nita Rai and her husband Som Raj Rai, Mongal Tamang, Bibek Tamang and his wife Suk Rai, and Pravesh Tamang; his grandchildren, Nistha Rai, Nischalta Rai, Nicole Rai; Ruth Tamang, and Roman Tamang. He also leaves his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends Man Bir Tamang, and Man Rai. Visitation will be held Saturday, January 18th from 2:00-3:30 at the funeral home. Suk’s funeral service will commence on Saturday at 3:30 upon conclusion of visitation. Interment will take place in Forest Hill Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
