February 19, 1922 - August 7, 2021
UTICA/NEW HARTFORD - Mrs. Gloria (Cardarelli) Sciortino, age 99, went home to her loved ones who were awaiting her on Saturday, August 7, 2021. At the time of her passing, those she loved most were in her heart. Born in New York, NY on February 19, 1922, Gloria was the daughter of the late Jay and Agnes (Carcone) Cardarelli. Her family came to Utica to make a new home, and Gloria attended local schools. On April 7, 1947, she married Philip N. Sciortino with whom she shared 69 years prior to his passing on June 11, 2016. She was blessed to have shared her life with such a wonderful gentleman, and she held sacred her feelings for him to her very last day. During her employment years, Gloria worked in retail positions in Downtown Utica stores, most notably the Harmony Shop on Genesee Street. As a music lover, she considered this to be one of her favorite jobs. During the 1970s and 1980s, she was part of the Gaetano family Enterprise as an Executive Secretary to Charles Gaetano, Sr. Gloria was a loving, compassionate woman. She was an excellent cook and baker, and she made sure that no one left her table hungry. In her spare time, she liked to read, keep up with current events, and solve Sudoku and word puzzles. She will be remembered for her wit, wisdom and charm. We will miss her. Gloria is survived by her devoted daughters, Linda M. Sciortino, and Camille A. Sciortino; her brother, Carl Cardarelli; sister-in-law, Helen Cardarelli; sister-in-law, Carmella Sciortino; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great nephews, cousins, and friends. She was predeceased by her brother, Joseph C. Cardarelli; sister-in-law, Rosemarie Cardarelli; brother-in-law, Frank N. Sciortino; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Nicholas and Josephine (Morrealle) Sciortino; and her special nephew and godson, Nicholas J. Sciortino. The family sends special thanks to the Charles A. Gaetano family, the Vetter family of Atlanta, GA and New Hartford, NY; special cousins Malio and Dorothy Cardarelli; and Alex and Valery Haroschka for making Gloria’s last days more comfortable. The family is grateful to the Masonic Care Community of NY, especially the staff of the Saranac Household for the loving and compassionate care provided to Gloria during her stay and final days; and The Pines at Utica Rehabilitation and Nursing staff for their excellent care of Gloria during her stay. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Gloria’s funeral service and Celebration of Life, which will commence on Thursday morning, August 12, 2021, at 9:30 at Historic Old St. John’s Church where her Mass of Christian Burial will be offered. The family will receive visitors at the conclusion of Mass. In lieu of floral offerings, memorial contributions in Gloria’s honor may be made to Historic Old St. John’s Church Food Pantry, 240 Bleecker Street, Utica, NY 13501 or to the Rescue Mission of Utica online at https://uticamission.org/donate. Envelopes will also be available at the service. Entombment will take place in Calvary Mausoleum at the convenience of the family.
