UTICA - Mrs. Carol L. (O’Donnell) Zogby, age 82, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 20, 2021 with her children by her side. Born in Utica on October 29, 1938, Carol was the daughter of the late Michael H., Sr. and Alice M. (Crandall) O’Donnell. She was a graduate of Utica Free Academy/Class of 1956. On February 17, 1957 she married Jack “Turk” Zogby. She was a reliable partner in their marriage, devoted to family life, and they knew the blessings of three children. An energetic, vivacious woman, her first venture into the working world was notable and unique ~ as a dance instructor at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio; and her favorite dance was the jitterbug. She then began a career in the grocery business at Loblaw’s, and with the inception of Price Chopper on Mohawk Street she became an Assistant in the Meat Department. Her pleasant personality made for a great co-worker and accommodating employee. By nature, Carol was a compassionate and generous person. She influenced her children to place family as a priority and they learned by her example. They strived to emulate those values, and she was respectful, honest, and a loyal soul. She loved to cook, including many ethnic dishes, prepared with love and hand-delivered to her children and loved ones! Her son-in-law claimed she made the best meat sauce. At gatherings, she prepared the meals and served all the guests, before she took a seat! Her Christmas holiday gifts included the annual forever-favorite “Hess” Truck. Grandma was the best gift giver! She chose presents that were intended for the benefit and pleasure of her grandkids who she was so proud of. When she attended their events you could see the joy in her eyes as she watched their accomplishments from year to year, as they matured. She was a strong and determined woman who was dutiful in her responsibilities; these were the successes of her life, and certainly a lost art. In earlier years, Carol was an avid reader with a preference for mysteries, loved Sunday cook outs at Delta Lake, and even until most recent times she enjoyed Days of Our Lives at one o’clock in the afternoon, when you dared not to disturb her! Carol loved each of her siblings, and she had a particularly powerful bond with her twin sister, Connie. They were connected and well-informed about each other’s agenda and activities, and they shared such incredible commonalities. Connie passed, and a week later Carol suffered a stroke, and for the next 21 years, she was determined to do the best she could to recover, but the Lord called her home. Carol practiced her Catholic faith at her home parish, St. Francis De Sales Church. Carol is survived by her husband, Jack; her daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Joe Betar, and Adele and James J. Guarno; and her son, Jack Zogby, Jr. who was a caregiver to both his mom, Carol and his dad, Jack; and her grandchildren, Joseph Betar, Esq. and fiancée Erica Cole; Marissa Guarno and Kaleb Crowe, and James A. Guarno and fiancée Ally Martens. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins; in-laws, Betty O’Donnell, Josephine O’Donnell; Adele Jones, and Ed Ferris; and her longtime friend, Vicki Annatone; they never forgot each other. She was predeceased by her siblings and their spouses, Michael and Phyllis O’Donnell, Jean and Anthony “Tony” Sadlik, Gordon O’Donnell, and her twin Constance “Connie” Crawford and her husband William; and her in-laws, Agnes Ferris, Joseph Zogby, and Clifford Jones. The family extends their gratitude to the UFD Paramedics for their kindness and prompt arrival; and the ER staff at MVHS at St. Luke’s Healthcare for their attention to her needs. The family commemorated and honored her life at a private time. In following the mission to provide a meal for those in need, those wishing to express an act of kindness in Carol’s memory may make a donation to Mother Marianne’s West Side Kitchen, online at https://mmwsk.org or by mail to 702 Columbia Street, Utica, New York 13502. During this time of social distancing that we are all experiencing, please take a moment to connect with Carol’s family through the “Memories” section of her obituary. Our prayers go out to all as a sign of our continued support. Irish Blessing May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face and until we meet again, May the Lord hold you in the palm of His hand.
