Thomas J. "Tom" Mannino

Mr. Thomas J. “Tom” Mannino, age 85, passed away on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 in the comfort and dignity of his home while being cared for by his wife and daughter. Born in Frankfort, NY on June 11, 1927, Thomas was the son of the late Rosario “Charles” and Marie (Lombardo) Mannino. Raised and educated in Frankfort, he attended Frankfort High School. A proud veteran, Tom honorably served his country with the United States Army Air Force from 1946-1947. At a Mayfair Dance in 1947, Tom met his sweetheart, the former Frances D. Scalzo, whom he courted, cherished, and made a lifelong commitment to on June 10, 1950 when he married her in St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church. They have been inseparable ever since. During Tom’s younger years, he held a position at the Union Fork & Hoe Company in Frankfort and Rome. After his wedding, he began his career as a crater and packer at Griffiss Air Force Base. He later held positions at Kelsey-Hayes and MDS (Mohawk Data Sciences) Corporation in Herkimer. He ultimately returned to Griffiss AFB in 1983 where he worked in the Auction Department, the position from which he retired. A man with a loving, compassionate heart, Tom was always the first to lend a hand. Though he was humorous and sharp-witted, he also held a sentimental side. He was expert at repairing things and finding practical solutions to problems and was meticulous in the maintenance of his home as well as his landscape. But Tom expended the most energy and love as patriarch of his cherished family. He treasured his family trips to Atlantic City and the Boardwalk, and he loved to travel the country for fun and especially to visit his family. Tom enjoyed bowling on the men’s leagues and also with his wife on the co-ed leagues. Tom and Fran enjoyed the Wii bowling League with their friends every Friday night. The OTB (Off-Track Betting Lounge) was his second home, and he liked to trot off to Vernon Downs on occasion. Tom was an avid NY Yankees fan. He was a member of the New Hartford American Legion and the IAM (International Association of Machinists). He was a parishioner of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish. Tom is survived by his wife, Fran; his children and their spouses, John and Terah Mannino of MI, Karen A. Fellows and fiancé Mark Gesaroni of New York Mills, and Capt. Thomas J. USMC and Morgan Mannino of Astoria, NY; his grandchildren, Kristen Fellows and E.J. Banas, Michael Fellows and Joan Kupiec; Rylan Mannino, Nicholas Mannino; Matthew Mannino, and Brock Mannino; and his great-grandchild, Hannah Fellows, who was the apple of Tom’s eye. Also left to recollect his life are his many goddaughters and nieces including Dina Scarchilli, Joan Lomery, Barbara LoMedico and her husband Jack; nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; cousins, especially Debbie, Nelson, and Brittany Pohoreskey; in-laws Lucille and Donald Capraro, Isabelle Mannino, and Bev Mannino; and friends Robert and Adele Pacilio, Josie Palazzo and her daughter Christine Sherman, Gertie Gagliano, Don and Mary Reese, Helen Trotta, and Steve Semeraro. He was predeceased by his brothers, James Mannino, John Mannino, and Sam Mannino; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Anthony and Frances Scalzo; cousin Phyllis Ross, and buddy Joe Palazzo. A special thank-you is extended to his daughter Karen, for all of her care, devotion and time she took to care for her dad; Dr. Thomas John for his support and home visits; the nurses and staff of Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc., especially Julie, Bonnie, Laurie, Irene, Nadine, Kelly, Ann, and Christine for their compassion; and the Visiting Nurse Association caretakers Julia, Elaine, Brenda, and Lori for their dedication. Much appreciation is also given to Belma, their neighbor for all her care and assistance. Visitation will be held Friday from 4:00-7:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. The members of the New Hartford Post #1376 will perform ritualistic services at 6:30 p.m. By family request, please omit flowers. Thomas’ funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence on Saturday morning at 8:30 from the funeral home and at 9:30 at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish where his Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Rev. James Cesta. Committal service and interment with Military Honors will take place graveside in Calvary Cemetery.
