Mr. Stephen J. "Thunder" Roman, Sr.

LEE CENTER, NY – Mr. Stephen J. “Thunder” Roman, Sr, age 61, passed away peacefully in the comfort and dignity of his home under unforeseen circumstances on Sunday, September 17, 2023. Stephen was born in Rome on March 21, 1962, the son of the late Herbert and Stella (Switzer) Roman-Drake. He was raised in Hinckley as well as Vernon Center, and he attended the VVS School District. On October 11, 1992, Stephen began a harmonious relationship with the former Ruth Ann Greenwood. Five years later, on the same day, they tied the knot and began their beautiful and joyful journey of marriage which lasted 33 years. They were constant companions, always by each other’s side throughout all of life’s journey. Stephen began and secured employment as a short order cook at several restaurants. Lastly, he began the journey of self-employment as a scrap metal collector. Stephen was a kind hearted, gentle, and generous man. Growing up in difficult circumstances, he shared a great closeness with his sister, Donna, and that made for each of them to be each other’s protector throughout their lives. As a father, he spoke of love, shared that, and supported all of their endeavors. He considered his children a great blessing to him. As loving as Stephen was, he also wasn’t afraid to place boundaries. If he wasn’t interested in doing something, such as going to an event or outing, he would not go. When he said no, he meant it. Stephen was a man of his word, and in harmony with himself. His inner peace was solid. A zealous outdoorsman, he loved nature. There were sports for every season. In the fall he hunted deer and turkey, and they gutted and dressed their trophy as a family. Dirt bike riding and racing, camping, and fishing filled their days. Winter was a slower time because of Stephen’s physical limitations, but he still found the energy to snowmobile. And in the spring it began it all over again! Steve was a huge animal lover and made his pets part of the family. His late dog Baby Girl and feline Rusty filled many days of companionship. Edward and his current pet, Maine Coon were like two peas in a pod and he will be lost as well. When Stephen wasn’t active outside, he was a great cook at home. Pastas in various presentations, always having Derek by his side, were created with recipes that were never written down. He also created chilis, stews, and sausage and onions to everyone’s delight. Stephen and Ruth hosted great holidays where they gave precious gifts and they were full of the kids’ desires. His sister Donna and her family were always a part of these occasions. They were the best of times and his presence will be horribly missed, but they will try their best to carry on the tradition. Spiritually, he knew of the Lord and believed in heaven, and missed those that went before him. Stephen is survived by his best friend and devoted wife, Ruth. Stephen’s children and their spouses also hold his memory close, Stephen J. Roman, Jr, Peter Roman and his wife, Britany Shawn Getz, and Derek M. Getz and Natasha Duncan. Additionally he is survived by numerous grandchildren; his siblings and their loves, George and Jenny Switzer, Herbert Roman, Jr., Donna and Michael Roberts, Walter Roman, Douglas Roman, and Howard Roman. He cherished the memory of his siblings who preceded him, David Roman, Brian Roman, and Mary Catherine Roman, who passed away on August 3, 2023. Additionally he leaves a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles; his in-laws, Cindy, Billy, Charlene, Rhonda, and Monty. He was preceded by additional in-laws, Monty “Boo Boo,” Shawn, and Shshone. He was also the host of many friends through his life, with the special remembrance of Gerry and the late Anne Stinebelckner. He was preceded by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Monty Robert, Sr. and Carolyn Clark. During Stephen’s untimely passing, it was through the support of cousins Cathy and Brian Kimball, who responded to Ruth’s needs with expedience. A special sense of gratitude is offered to the volunteers of the Lee Center Fire Department, and their EMTs, the New York State Sheriff’s Department as well as the New York State Troopers; they were of tremendous assistance and compassionate guidance. Noteworthy acknowledgement is extended to CJ Kimball, Cameron Kimball, Kyle Kimball, and Brian Kimball, Jr. A Memorial Gathering will be held on Monday, September 25, 2023 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. A Memorial Funeral and Celebration of Life will follow at 5:00 p.m. Those unable to attend may be present virtually at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85984532601.
