Salwa F. (Younis) Chamoun

Mrs. Salwa F. (Younis) Chamoun, of Utica, passed away on Thursday, July 31, 2008 at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center with her loving family by her side. Born in Palestine on April 9, 1927, Salwa was the daughter of the late Toufic and Tamam Younis. She was raised and educated in Lebanon. On June 15, 1952 she married Fahd F. Chamoun with whom she shared a loving union of 50 years prior to his passing on March 16, 2002. A devoted mother and grandmother, Salwa enjoyed caring for her cherished family and her home. She will always be remembered for the outstanding example she set for her children and grandchildren. She loved to cook and offered her hospitality to anyone who visited her home. She was devoted to her Christian and Maronite faith and was a communicant of St. Louis Gonzaga Church. Salwa is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Antoine “Tony” and Diane Chamoun of Utica, and Bassam Chamoun of Grand Rapids, MI; her daughters and sons-in-law, Maria and Elias Dagher, and Angel and George Chamoun, all of Lebanon. She always cherished in her heart the memory of her son, George Chamoun, who preceded her in death in 1979. Survivors also include her 11 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and in-laws. She also leaves her dear and cherished friends at the Steinhorst Apartments. She was predeceased by 3 brothers, all of Lebanon. The family extends thanks to Dr. Naji El Khoury, Dr. Ramzi Nassif, Dr. Ahmed Shatla, the nurses and staff of the Intensive Care Unit of the St. Elizabeth Medical Center, caregiver Mary Ross, and Mary Jo of the Senior Network Health; Father Bassam Saade for his spiritual guidance, and the Mt. Zion Ministries for their prayers and support. Visitation will be held Monday from 9:45-10:45 at St. Louis Gonzaga Church, 520 Rutger Street. By family request, please omit floral offerings. For those wishing to do so, please consider memorial donations in Salwa’s honor to St. Louis Gonzaga Church; envelopes will be available at the service. Salwa’s funeral service will commence immediately upon the conclusion of visitation at 11:00 at St. Louis Gonzaga Church, where the Divine Liturgy of the Faithful Departed will be celebrated by Father Bassam Saade, Pastor.
