Salvatore P. "Sal" Sardina

Mr. Salvatore P. “Sal” Sardina, age 90, of Utica, passed away on Thursday, November 1, 2007 at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center. Born in Utica on July 29, 1917, Salvatore was the son of the late Santo and Lucy (Valentino) Sardina. He was raised and educated locally. A veteran of World War II, he served his country stateside in the U. S. Navy. On September 27, 1941 he married the former Carmella “Millie” Piccione with whom he shared 60 years prior to her passing on July 30, 2002. Millie and Savy shared a loving and devoted relationship, and to his very last day he missed and adored her memory. For over 30 years, Sal was a driver for the Utica Carting Co. and was proud to be a lifelong member of the Teamsters Local #182. One of his life’s greatest fulfillments was being a supportive and devoted father and "pop". Lively and lighthearted, he and Millie were quite the dancers! He was spirited and graceful in his maneuvers, and they enjoyed socializing through this art form. He was a loyal Yankee fan, and even watched the games proudly sporting his Yankee cap, and was never known to miss a good western on television. Sal was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, and a parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Church. Sal is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Geri and Steve Abruzzo of Las Vegas, NV; his son and daughter-in-law, Santo and Karen Sardina of Whitesboro; his grandchildren, Rene Sardina, Salvatore and Denise Sardina, Kristen Shuemaker, Steven, Jr. and LeeAnne Abruzzo, and Anthony Abruzzo; and his great-grandchildren, Josh, Christina, Angelina, and Gianna. Also surviving are his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and in-laws, Jeanette Sardina, Nancy Sardina, Jerry F. and Julia Piccione, and Anthony and Florence Piccione. He was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Rose and Frank Cosamano; his brothers and sister-in-law, James V. Sardina, Albert and Helen Sardina, and Joseph J. “Butch” Sardina, Sr.; and his in-laws, Carmen P. Piccione, and Lucy A. and John G. Pedone. The past year of Sal’s life was made more pleasant through the efforts of the staff and his new friends at the Presbyterian Residential Community; for all of their love and support the family will remain grateful and appreciative. A special thank you is also extended to the 4th Floor nurses and staff at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center, as well as Dr. Roger Breslow, for their care and consideration. Visitation will be held Sunday (today) from 3:00-6:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. By family request, please omit floral offerings. For those wishing to do so, please consider memorial contributions in Sal’s memory to the Parkinson’s Unit at the Presbyterian Home or the American Heart Association; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Sal’s funeral service will commence on Monday at 12:00 noon from the funeral home and at 1:00 at St. Anthony of Padua Church where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will take place in St. Agnes Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
