Mr. Salvatore Anthony Spina

Mr. Salvatore Anthony Spina, age 70, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 in the privacy of his home. Born in Utica on January 9, 1944, Salvatore was the son of the late Joseph S. and Virginia (Rosato) Spina. Raised and educated locally, he attended T.R. Proctor High School. At one time he was wed to Rosalie A. (Bono) Spina. In his earlier years, Sal and Rosalie owned and operated Sal’s Beauty Salon located on the corner of Wetmore and Bleecker Streets, a career through which, he made many lasting friendships. More recently, he held a position with the Central New York Psychiatric Center where he worked in the capacity of SHTA, the position from which he retired. Sal was a generous, devoted man blessed with an intuitive mind and great insight. He was attentive to the needs of his family, and in his later years, gave special attention to his grandchildren, supporting them in all their activities, especially their musical endeavors. He never missed a concert or an opportunity to listen to them play. He looked forward to gathering with loved ones for holidays and special occasions. He loved to travel and treasured the fond memories made on cruises taken with his son, Michael and Susan. He also enjoyed riding his Harley with his brother, Anthony, as they travelled to motorcycle rallies throughout several states. Sal always sought the good in others and found true joy in giving. He was charitable of heart and spirit, and he found comfort in praying the Novena to St. Anthony at his home parish, St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church. Sal is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph Salvatore and Lisa A. Spina of Deerfield, and Michael P. and Susan M. Spina of New York Mills; his grandchildren, Joseph Spina Jr., Jordonna Spina, and Gennaro Spina; his sister, Sandra Spina and Earl Goodhines of N. Utica; and his brothers and sister-in-law, Anthony and Sandra Spina of N. Utica, and John J. Spina of Utica. His extended family includes his aunt, Lena Rosato; his many nieces and nephews including Michael Perez and Carol Dufresne, Michelle and Charles Warney, Jackie Napier, and Jennifer (Spina) and Joseph Wambsgan; his great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and his many dear friends who held a special place in his heart, especially Stacy Kobler who looked to Sal as a father figure. He was predeceased by his nephew, Jason Spina, in 2009. The family extends gratitude to Sal’s many friends and neighbors who were always available to lovingly offer their assistance in making his life easier, especially acknowledging Jim, Joe, Linda and Karen. Visitation will be held Friday from 4:00-7:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Salvatore’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence on Saturday morning at 10:00 from the funeral home and at 11:00 at St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church where his Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Rev. Mark Kaminski. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
