Salvatore G. "Sal" Arcuri

Mr. Salvatore G. “Sal” Arcuri, age 86, of Utica, went home to be with the Lord and was reunited with his son on Saturday, August 4, 2012. His passing occurred under the care of the Siegenthaler Center staff with the love and support of his family by his side. Salvatore was born in Utica on January 15, 1926, the son of the late Joseph D. and Petronella (Nicotera) Arcuri. A proud veteran of World War II and a member of the Greatest Generation, he held a deep honor, courage, and dedication for his country. He served as a member of the United States Marine Corps stationed in what the Marines consider the most hallowed spot on earth, Iwo Jima, and was decorated for his valor and awarded the Purple Heart Medal. At one time he held memberships with the American Legion, DAV Stars & Stripes Chapter #82, as well as the Teamsters Local #182. On June 14, 1949 Sal wed the former Kathleen E. “Kay” Conley with whom he celebrated 64 years of a devoted marriage. Sal was an outstanding man especially when it pertained to his family and their well being; he will be remembered for his honesty and his hard work ethic. When life was well, he especially enjoyed the game of golf particularly the camaraderie of his "boys" who consisted of family and loyal friends. Sal is survived by his wife, Kay, who never left his side, and his two wonderful and beautiful children, his daughter, Debbie and his son, Tom. Always close to his heart was the memory of his son, Salvatore G. Arcuri, Jr. who passed away on November 2, 1957. Also left to mourn his passing are his grandsons who were the light of his life and soul, Tommy and Tara, Michael, and Christopher; and his adored great-grandchildren, Isis, Rocco, and Thomas III; his sisters Congetta “Connie” Marine, Rose Rescigno, Antoinette “Lalla” Durante, and Janet Cannistra; his brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Sally Arcuri; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, in-laws Robert and Anna Mae Conley, and Pat and Paul Reile, and his blessed friend Norton Esposito “who never forgot”. He was predeceased by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Josephine and Vincent Zegarelli, Mary R. Kaufman, and Amelia and Francis Jones; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Alexander and Marianne Arcuri, Pete and Mamie Arcuri, Dominick and Molly Arcuri, Victor “Vito” Arcuri, and Nicholas L. Arcuri; and his in-laws Anthony Cannistra, Robert Durante, Butch Jones, Lucille and Vincent Diodati, and William and Florence Conley. The family will never forget the care and compassion offered by Dr. Roger Breslow, and the lifeline of Christine and Andrew. A special bond was also shared with Phillip Janacke, a gifted aide who respectfully cared for Sal. The last phase of Sal’s life was spent with the loving and dedicated staff of Hospice at the Siegenthaler Center, where comfort and peace were so evident and their affection so meaningful. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 18, at 12:00 p.m.at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish at St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church with Military Honors conferred by the United States Marine Corps. The family honored Savie’s life by caring for him diligently during his extended illness and at the time of his passing.
