Sadie (Scalzo) Wilson

Mrs. Sadie (Scalzo) Wilson, age 94, of Utica, passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, August 17, 2008 at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center. Born in Utica on November 20, 1913, Sadie was the daughter of the late Carmine and Maria (Barratta) Scalzo. She was raised and educated in Utica. Sadie was married to Harry Wert, and as a couple, they resided in Rhode Island where they operated a men’s clothing store where she was a talented seamstress. They later retired to California where they lived until Harry’s passing in 1958. Sadie was blessed with a second union in 1963 to Donald Wilson with whom she enjoyed a relationship of happiness and companionship until his passing in the 1990’s. Sadie returned to Utica to be closer to her family who affectionately knew her as “Aunt Sally”. An energetic woman who filled her day with activities, she was a great shopper and enjoyed dining out, especially with her nieces. She was blessed with a sharp mind and a keen, delicate sense of decorum. Sadie was a woman of quiet demeanor, very kind, and appreciative of all the thoughtful efforts of her family; she loved them true-heartedly. She educated herself through reading and appreciated the information and entertainment of television. She had an affinity for animals, and a special love for her late dog, Duke. She was a communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Church where she faithfully participated in weekly Mass. Sadie is survived by her nieces and nephews, especially acknowledging Marion Gauris, and Dolores LoConti, who have shared a special sisterhood; her great-nieces, and great-nephew, especially acknowledging Tom Presite and his wife, Mariam, who have been devoted and respectful to their aunt. She also leaves her cousins, and sister-in-law, Florence Scalzo. She was predeceased by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret and Santo Serianni, Bertha and Dennis Presite, and Mary and Salvatore Pasquale; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Anthony and Columbia Scalzo, Joseph and Josephine Scalzo, Louis and Angela Scalzo, and Peter J. Scalzo. The family extends thanks to the caretakers of the Rehabilitation Unit at the Charles T. Sitrin Health Care Center who were exceptionally kind to Sadie. Visitation will be held Tuesday (today) from 5:00-7:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc. 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. By family request, please omit floral offerings. Sadie’s funeral service will commence on Wednesday morning at 9:30 from the funeral home and at 10:30 at St. Anthony of Padua Church where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will take place in St. Agnes Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
