Rose J. (Barone) Salerno

Mrs. Rose J. (Barone) Salerno, age 83, a longtime Utican and currently of Ft. Myers, FL, passed away on Friday, May 23, 2008. Born in Lee Center, NY on December 8, 1924, Rose was the daughter of the late Joseph and Filomena (Conte) Barone. She was raised in Rome, NY and educated in the Rome School District. In February of 1942 she married James V. Salerno with whom she shared 48 years of marriage prior to his passing on May 15, 1990. A person with a great work ethic, Rose’s working life began with the General Electric Company. She then applied her intuitive business sense and talents when she worked as a saleswoman for the Prestige Silverware Company. She was later employed with the Peoples Home Equipment Company, as well as at the Broadacres Nursing Home, and lastly she worked at the Teamster’s Union, Local #182 in the pension department, the position from which she retired. A woman of great strength of character, Rose’s family was the vital force of her life and she was a caregiver in many ways. Her legacy as a loyal mother was admirable and she committed her heart and soul to her family’s well-being. She had a special way of making sure that celebrations in her children’s lives were done with style and grace. In her more leisure years, she was an avid reader and loved to play cards. While residing In Florida, she was a member of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary. Rose is survived by her daughters, Lorraine “Cookie” Riscica of Ft. Myers, FL, with whom she resided, and Theresa Sokolowski of N. Utica; her sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Anna Rose Salerno of Clinton, and James and Patricia Salerno of New Hartford; her grandchildren, Joseph and Joleen Riscica, Michael Riscica, Nicole Riscica and her companion Lee Tinque, and Dean Riscica; Rose Sokolowski and fiancé Aaron Cidzik, Ruth Sokolowski, Rachel Sokolowski, and Mary Theresa Sokolowski; Joseph Salerno II, Elizabeth Salerno; James Salerno, Tricia and Steven Quagrello, Jacquelyn Salerno and fiancé Christopher Viti, and Nina and Carey Fortnam; and her 4 great-grandchildren, Brooke Riscica; Isabella, Anthony, and Mia Quagrello. Survivors also include her goddaughter, Cynthia Nistico; her in-laws, Jean and Louis Lucarotti of CA; and her special and longtime friends, Lucy and Angelo Simone, and Jane Dziura. She was predeceased by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Frank Spadafora, and Rachel and Lugo R. Pantaleo. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4:00-8:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. By family request, please omit floral offerings. For those wishing to do so, please consider memorial contributions in Rose’s honor to the Abraham House; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Rose’s funeral service will commence on Thursday morning at 9:00 from the funeral home and at 10:00 at Historic Old St. John’s Church where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Entombment will take place in the Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum at the convenience of the family.
