Rose A. (Scalzo) Zegarelli

Mrs. Rose A. (Scalzo) Zegarelli, age 90, of Utica, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 9, 2010 at the Masonic Care Community of NY where she was currently residing. Her loving family was by her side at the time of her passing. Born in Utica on May 5, 1920, Rose was the daughter of the late Anthony and Maria Fortunata (Pingitore) Scalzo. She was raised and educated locally. On January 10, 1948 she wed Augustine B. “Augie” Zegarelli who passed away on June 27, 2000. During their 52 year marriage the couple shared a wonderful life filled with many beautiful memories. During her working days, Rose was employed by the General Electric Radio Receiver Plant. She later retired from Broadacres Skilled Nursing Facility after more than ten years of service as a health care aide. But the spark of Rose’s life was kindled by her family, especially her grandchildren. She was supportive in all their athletic activities and enjoyed traveling to see her grandchildren in Pennsylvania. She also held a special bond with her siblings and had been a devoted daughter to her parents. She was involved in community discussions, freely offering her opinions on topics debated on the Danny Fusco radio show. For recreation, she visited various casinos where she loved the excitement of the slot machines. She was a parishioner of St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church. Rose is survived by her daughters and their families, Carol Zegarelli and Tom Birdsall of South Utica, and Gayle VanGorder and Larry Mitsler of NY Mills. Always close to her heart was the memory of her daughter, Josephine Maciolek, who passed away on September 1, 2004. She also leaves her son-in-law, Steve Maciolek of PA. Rose is also survived by her grandchildren, David and Malea D’Amico, and Ryan and Tara D’Amico, all of Clinton, Cheryle VanGorder of NY Mills, PFC Brandon VanGorder, U.S. Army, and his wife Taryn VanGorder, U.S. Air Force, both stationed in Texas; Lisa and Steve Steirer, Warrant Officer of the PA National Guard, and Steve and Karen Maciolek, all of PA; and Kristie Maciolek-Small, Esq. and her husband Kevin Small; and her great-grandchildren, Tyler, Logan, and Julia D’Amico, Christopher D’Amico, Colin Roberts, A. J. VanGorder, Sarah Steirer, Jacob Steirer, Kyle Schruer, Gavin Small, and Liam Small. Survivors also include her sisters, Carmella “Cora” Nasto, and Sarah Pezzulo, both of Utica; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and her sister-in-laws Grace Scalzo. She was predeceased by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Theresa and Bill Ramson, and Antoinette and Austin Giordano; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank and Sarah Scalzo, Sam Scalzo, and Peter Scalzo. The family would like to thank the staff of the Inlet household at the Masonic Care Community, especially acknowledging Trish, Jamie, and Ann Marie, who offered loving and respectful care to Rose during her stay. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2:00-5:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Rose’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence on Monday morning at 8:00 from the funeral home and at 9:00 at St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Committal prayers and interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery.
