Mr. Ronald A. "Ronnie" Gumbs

ROME - Mr. Ronald A. “Ronnie” Gumbs, age 82, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 19, 2024. Born in Utica on September 3, 1941, Ronald was the son of the late Cyril and Congetta (Bernardi) Gumbs. He attended Wetmore Elementary School and was a graduate of T.R. Proctor High School/Class of 1959. In his youth, he played the drums with the Utica Boys Drum & Bugle Corps. Ronnie furthered his collegiate studies at Long Island University C.W. Post Campus where he pursued his Law Degree. During college, Ronnie was employed by Abraham & Straus in New York City. He later accepted a 4th grade teaching position at Wetmore Elementary School. Ronnie was known to enjoy the finer things in life. He enjoyed the tranquility of his home and he loved to follow the stock market. At one time he was wed to Bonnie Cole, from that union came the blessing of their two children. A loving, caring, and selfless man, Ronnie was also an attentive father to his son and daughter. His family was the most important part of his existence. He was a parishioner of St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church. Ronnie is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Gwenn Anne and Todd Claytor; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Carla Jerome; grandchildren, Merideth, Holly, Grant, Julette, Virginia, Lia, and Max. He was also blessed with two beloved great-grandchildren. His memory lives on in the hearts of his sister and brother-in-law, Cindy and Joseph Gentile; and his brother and sister-in-law, Patrick and Rosemary Gumbs. He fondly remembered his sister and brother-in-law who preceded him, Annette “Cookie” and Louis Eddy. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and godparents, Marie and the late Til Cucci. He was additionally predeceased by his niece, Sharon Ann Eddy; and his two dearest friends, Vincent Barnaba, and Anthony Papale. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Grand at Rome, who cared for Ronald with great attentiveness and compassion. Ronald’s family will honor and commemorate his life privately. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Ronald’s Mass of Christian Burial and Celebration of Life which will commence on Friday, May 24, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church, 422 Tilden Ave. There will be an opportunity to greet the family at the conclusion of Mass. In lieu of floral offerings, memorial contributions in Ronald’s honor may be made to St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church, 422 Tilden Ave., Utica, NY 13501; envelopes will also be available at the service. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family. "I did my best, God will do the rest."
