Mr. Robert "Bob" Mondi

Mr. Robert “Bob” Mondi, age 61, went home to Jesus on Saturday, July 11, 2015 as he passed away at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center with his loving family by his side. Born in Utica on April 29, 1954, Robert was the son of the late Peter J. and Elvira (Gallo) Mondi. Raised and educated in Whitesboro, he was a graduate of Whitesboro High School/Class of 1972. On June 25, 1977 he married his best friend, the former Leslie Langdon; they set a fine example for their children and family by embracing the traditional values of hard work and honesty. Throughout their 38 years together, they were a perfect match and they maintained a love for each other that was equal and everlasting. Bob was dedicated to his career as a butcher and meat manager and proud to be a member of UFCW, local #1. He was a proactive and positive thinker in his positions at Grand Union and Chicago Market. As an entrepreneur, he established Mondi’s Meats in New Hartford in 1986 operating until 1996. He and his family then relocated to Salisbury, MD until 2000 and subsequently returned to Utica where he graciously accepted a position as the Manager of the Meat Department at Price Chopper Supermarket in New Hartford. Bob loved his work and was a perfectionist in his responsibilities on the job until his retirement in April of 2015 due to ill health. A number of his customers became his lifelong friends and part of his extended family. His hospitality and warm personality will be missed, and his absence mourned by many. Bob was a congenial and easy-going guy with a magnetic personality. He precisely put to use his quick-wit and humor in conversations and friendly chats. He was admired for his attributes of respect and loyalty. Bob was an awesome dad who gave sound advice and always looked at “the big picture” when assessing situations. He taught his children to find the good and the bad in every situation and to make the right choice by contemplating consequences. As a Papa, he loved his grandchildren and they loved him. Many memories were made through the wonderful ways he connected with them. He was magical in their eyes. Bob worked hard to provide for his family, and their prosperity was paramount to him. His success in life stemmed from the special times when everyone he cared about had happiness in their hearts and harmony in their homes. Bob enjoyed cooking and during the holidays his Italian heritage was infused into the fine food he prepared and the picturesque way he presented it. His home was always open to family and friends. Bob had a fancy for cars and motorcycles, and boating and fishing were his favorite hobbies. He was proud of his possessions, but he was not ostentatious. He had a talent for working with wood and leather, crafting many gifts that were unique and meaningful. Bob had a private faith and during his sickness he found solace in his Lord. His camp at Sylvan Beach was his peaceful haven and piece of heaven. He pedaled his bike, relaxed in the outdoors, and remained mesmerized by the serenity of the sunsets on Oneida Lake. Robert is survived by his wife, Leslie; his daughters and son-in-law, Kate Mondi of Utica, and Sarah and Frank Guarascio of Whitesboro; his son, Pete Mondi and fiancee Christine Fortnam of Rochester; and his grandchildren, Brady, Jack, and Matthew Corrigan and their dad Kevin Corrigan; and Julia, Avrie, and Caroline Guarascio. He will also be missed by his sister, Cheryl Mondi of New Hartford; and his brothers and sister-in-law, Richard Mondi of Whitesboro, and Peter and Annette Mondi of Remsen. He loved his many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and in-laws, Susan Hensel-Mondi of Batavia, Shelley and John Abraham, Artie and Lisa Langdon, and Scott and Shareen Langdon. He was blessed with many friendships during his life, especially his childhood friends with whom he remained close until his very last day, Richie Karrat, Frank Custodero, Danny Farr, Dave Kohler, Dave Christiansen, Mike Hughes, Wayne Brosemer, …and many more. He was predeceased by his brother, Frank J. “Butch” Mondi on October 9, 1997; his nephews, Matthew Mondi, and William Klenotiz; and his in-laws Arthur and Elizabeth Langdon. The family is grateful to Dr. Manzurul Sikder, Dr. Thomas John, the staffs of the Slocum-Dickson Medical Group, and the 6th Floor Oncology Unit at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center. All were caring, truly understanding, and compassionate. Thanks also to the supportive personnel of the Pediatric Department where Bob’s wife works; they were so loving and sympathetic during the many difficult moments of Bob’s journey. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4:00-7:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Bob’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence on Tuesday evening at 7:00 at the funeral home immediately upon conclusion of visitation.
