Mr. Philip L. Lester

UTICA - Mr. Philip L. Lester, age 57, went home to be with his creator after succumbing to cancer, on Friday, July 19, 2024. Born in Detroit, MI on January 15, 1966, Philip was the son of the late Willie “Carl,” Sr., and Willie Mae (Hicks) Lester. Raised and educated in Utica, he was a proud graduate of T.R. Proctor High School. At one time he was wed to Cheriel Davis, and from that union came the blessing of a son. He also shared in a relationship with Lorrie Dexter for many years. Philip was a very caring and selfless man who would give you the shirt off his back. He was very stylish, loved to look good, was a trendy dresser, and always sported his jewelry. His role as family protector was one he took seriously. He was the family “Super Hero” always coming to the rescue. A caregiver by nature he was a fatherly figure to all his loved ones. In his earlier years, Philip loved to work out and play basketball; he was a big fan of Michael Jordan. Philip is survived by his son and his love, Marquise A. Lester and Lacey Johnson; and grandson, Lamelo Lester. He was proud to know he was expecting another grandchild in January. He also leaves to cherish his memory his sisters, Carlene Lester-Jones and Carlissa Lester; brothers, Anthony Ponders, Charles Lester, James Lester, Jerome Lester, and Adrian Lester. He fondly remembered his siblings who preceded him, Carleen Lester (2000), Fred Lester (2017), and Carl “CJ” Lester, Jr. (2021). He shared a special bond with his many nieces, especially Christina “Looney” Ware; and nephews. He took the role as a father figure to his great-nieces and great-nephews, Markel Ware, Niasa Ware, Tatiana Ware, the late Zikeya Carleen Lester, Aliayia Johnson, and Jazier Johnson. He also leaves behind many cousins. The family extends a heartfelt thanks to Christina Ware and her son Markel Ware for their loving care, and for going above and beyond for their favorite uncle and great-uncle. They lovingly tended to him until his passing, allowing for a peaceful transition. Philip’s family will honor and commemorate his life at a private time.
