Mrs. Paula A. (Borgia) Nassimos

WHITESBORO - Mrs. Paula A. (Borgia) Nassimos, age 86, a beloved mother who fought the good fight, passed away on Friday, March 24, 2017 at the Katherine Luther Residential Health Care & Rehabilitation Center. Born in Utica on January 4, 1931, Paula was the daughter of the late Alexander Dominick and Josephine (Sabatano) Borgia. She was raised and educated locally. On September 12, 1948 she married Samuel H. Nassimos with whom she shared 54 years in a marriage of their era. Their priority was providing for their family and they sacrificed so their children could have a comfortable life and home. Sam passed away on March 5, 2003. Paula was employed by the Presbyterian Home for Central NY for 11 years, retiring as a Certified Nurse Assistant. Although she worked hard at other local companies, she was first and foremost an impeccable homemaker, matriarch, and mother. Paula was a woman of character and she fiercely defended the well-being of her children, living up to the promise of “always being a mother”. She was perceptive in providing wise advice to her children, persistent in meeting all her obligations at home and at work, and prudent in her judgments and choices in life. She embraced many mottos and adages from the past, and she was blessed with a great sense of humor. She was of Sicilian heritage and carried on the traditions of her unique Italian culture. Paula was an expert in Italian baking and she honored the holidays by preparing her delicious ethnic delicacies which she gifted to friends and family. Paula had strength in believing that she and Sam could build their own home, a project successfully completed with the help of loved ones and loyal friends. It was a home where they raised their family and had memories of many good times, good food, and good company. Her door was open to all. Paula participated in the popular 1970’s pastime of ceramics and artfully created decorative pieces which are in vogue today. She had a special relationship with all her pets. She loved animals and appreciated their companionship. Although Paula was living a different life during these latter years, she persevered in her struggle to maintain her dignity, and her faith in her Lord always prevailed. She was a parishioner of St. Louis Gonzaga Church. Paula is survived by her children and their loved ones, Samuel H. Nassimos, Jr. of Utica and Lionel Brown, George A. Nassimos of Palm Springs, CA, and Anthony and Doreen Nassimos of Madison, CT; her granddaughters, Alexandra, and Molly Nassimos; and her sister, Laura Giacona. She also leaves her nieces and nephews, especially acknowledging Joe and Sharon Nassimos; great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her brothers, Thomas Borgia, and Joseph “Butch” Borgia; and her sisters, Josephine Silvernail, Tillie Rosa, Lena Borgia, and Rose Trotta. The family is grateful to the staff of the Willow wing of the Katherine Luther Residential Health Care & Rehabilitation Center as well as the staff of the physical therapy unit for their personal kindness and attention given to Paula. Visitation will be held Friday from 10:00-12:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South Street, corner of Hammond Ave. By family request please omit floral offerings memorial contributions may be made to the Stevens-Swan Humane Society; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Paula’s funeral service will commence on Friday at 12:00 from the funeral home and at 1:00 at St. Louis Gonzaga Church where the Divine Liturgy for the Faithful Departed will be celebrated. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
