Mr. Nellis W. "Nel" Nelson

UTICA – Mr. Nellis W. “Nel” Nelson, age 77, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2025, and was reunited with his loved ones who had gone before him. Born in Salisbury Center on June 1, 1947, Nellis was the son of the late Norman and Helen (Bills) Nelson. He was raised and educated in Salisbury Center. He later relocated to the Utica area, where he married the former Janice A. Ward on October 17, 1965. Through this union came with the blessing of five children. Nel began his career at the former Jones of Utica. He then became a partner at R&N Construction alongside his brother, Raymond Nelson. After many years of physical labor, Nel transitioned to a position with Centro, where he formed many lifelong friendships. Known for his quick-witted personality, Nel dedicated nearly 16 years to the company before retiring. Nel enjoyed spending his leisure time in the great outdoors, where he was known for his passion for hunting and fishing with close friends. At times, he would bring his children along to share in the adventure. The family cherishes the memories of camping trips and family reunions at Baker's Beach. When indoors, Nel's favorite hobbies included bowling in a league or playing a good game of pitch down at Utica Post “Club” 229. Nellis is survived by his wife, Janice Nelson; children and their spouses, Michael and Diane Nelson, Kelly Feldt (the late Brian J. Feldt), Tracy and Sean Galimo, Tammy LeFever, and Philip Nelson; grandchildren and their loves, Michael Jr. and Jenna Nelson, Kayla Nelson-Batch and Brandon Batch, Timothy Feldt, Michael and Colleen LeFever, Bradley Feldt, Marissa LeFever-Young, Alexa Galimo, and Andrew Galimo; and his army of great-grandchildren, Matthew Nelson, Cassidy Nelson, Felicity Hubalek, Sydney Young, Sierra LeFever, Hannah Batch, and Gianni Mungo. Nel’s loss is also deeply felt by his sister, Norma Picente (the late George A. Picente); and his sister-in-law, Rose Nelson (the late Ronald Nelson, Sr.). He fondly remembered his brothers and sisters-in-law who preceded him, Robert and Evelyn Nelson, Raymond and Patricia “Patty” Nelson, and Wesley “Wes” and Martha Nelson. Nel will also be remembered by his sisters-in-law, Eva Ward, Margaret Ward (the late Donald Ward), Nancy Ward (the late Bruce Ward), and Barbara Ward (the late Gary Ward.); and his three close friends, Ray, Gus, and Mike “Perk.” He was additionally predeceased by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Veronica (Quenell) Ward; and his brothers-in-law and their wives, Carl Ward, Gerald Ward, Charlie and Jacqueline Ward, Richard and Jenny Ward, Robert and Joan Ward, and Bradley and Linda Ward.
