Mr. Michael N. Mahana

UTICA- Mr. Michael N. Mahana, age 72, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, February 15, 2017. At the time of his passing he was in the hearts of those he loved. Born in Utica on June 2, 1944, Michael was the son of the late Abdoo and Emily (Sfeir) Mahana. He was raised and educated locally and also attended a local trade school which afforded him a position at Utica Cutlery Company. Michael was a kind hearted, amiable gentleman. Because his religious beliefs guided his life, he was respectful and often blessed others with sincerity. He held a special place in his heart for his sister Marian who offered him the attention, affection, and love that served as an inspiration to him. Michael’s daily routine included a walk and a talk with acquaintances at the East Utica Hannaford Shopping Center where he was a familiar figure. Although he frequented many locally owned restaurants, his most memorable place to eat was Toma’s Deli. Michael’s self-confidence and independence became more cherished as life progressed, and his devotion to his Catholic creed brought him closer to his parish, St. Louis Gonzaga Church where he faithfully attended Mass, served as an usher, and enjoyed Friday fish fries. Michael will be best remembered as being truly a peaceful soul. Michael is survived by his sister, Marian A. Karam of Utica; his brother and sister-in-law, George and Janet Mahana of Brewerton, NY; his nieces and nephew, Darlene Ann Karam, Steven and Amy Mahana, and Beth (Mahana) Stephenson, as well as their families; and his cousins, especially George T. Sfeir with whom he shared a special closeness. He was blessed with a dear friend and great buddy, Benny Lupo. He was predeceased by his brother, Edward N. “Eddie” Mahana; his brother-in-law, Ernest T. “Nini” Karam who he loved as another brother; and his sister-in-law, Mary Ann Mahana. The family extends their appreciation to Dr. Mathew Ulahannan for the continuous communication and comfort he provided to Michael and the family; his special angels, Missy Grant, and Colleen both of whom went above and beyond in caring for him. The family also thanks Chorbishop John D. Faris, Father Aaron Sandbothe, and Deacons Peter Hobaica and Paul Salamy for their spiritual guidance and concern; and Michael’s neighbors at the Steinhorst Apartments for their friendship and kindness. Visitation will be held Monday (today) from 5:00-7:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. The Prayer of Incense will be offered this evening at 6:45 at the funeral home. Those wishing to express an act of kindness may make a donation to the St. Louis Gonzaga Church Hall Renovation Fund in lieu of flowers; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Michael’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence on Tuesday morning at 10:00 from the funeral home and at 11:00 at St. Louis Gonzaga Church where the Divine Liturgy for the Faithful Departed will be celebrated by Father Aaron Sandbothe. Interment will take place in St. Agnes Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
