Mr. Michael F. Cordo

UTICA – Mr. Michael F. Cordo, age 89, passed peacefully on Friday, June 5, 2026. Born in Utica on March 12, 1937, Michael was the son of the late Rosario and Theresa (Denarola) Cordo. He was proud to have attended Mt. Carmel Grammar School. A proud U.S. Veteran, Michael served his country in the United States Army from 1962-1966. On September 18, 1965, Michael was united in marriage with the former Judith Ann “Judy” Matrulli. The couple shared nearly 60 years of a loving and devoted partnership prior to Judy’s passing less than one year ago on July 15, 2025. A skilled carpenter by trade, Michael began his work career alongside his brother-in-law, Tim, building homes in Syracuse. He also worked for various local construction companies, including Gaetano Construction Co. and Buck Construction Co. He then went on to be employed with the Utica City School District in its Maintenance Department, from which he retired in 2004. Michael was an excellent husband, father and “Poppie,” as well as a good provider and mentor. It was important to his loved ones that his gift of unconditional love and concern would always remain a constant. His main role in life was as patriarch to his family. Blessed with a sense of humor, Michael always appreciated telling and listening to a good joke. Michael was a proud member of the local Carpenters Union #120. Musically inclined, Michael loved to listen to music, especially the sounds of flamenco guitarists and artists such as Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, and Blood, Sweat & Tears. He also liked playing his guitar for family while seated at the kitchen table. In his earlier years, Michael enjoyed bowling and fishing. He especially relished time spent with his brother, Frank, fishing at Lake Ontario. Gifted with his hands, he was always creating wood items, especially jewelry boxes that he lovingly shared with his loved ones. Frequenting the Turning Stone and Vernon Downs Casinos also brought Michael much joy. Over the past year, he grew close to a yellow lab named Marco and came to look forward to his visits. At one time, Michael was a member of Mary, Mother of Our Savior Parish, Lourdes Campus. Michael is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Theresa C. and Robert F. Schachtler; son and daughter-in-law, Michael R. and Tanya Cordo; grandchildren, Gabriella A. Cordo and Marcus Allen, and Kaytlyn and Nicholas Bello; sister, Genevieve Venturino (the late Italo Venturino); and in-laws, Fred and Ann Marie Matrulli. He held close the memories of his siblings and their spouses who preceded him, Marie F. and Samuel M. “Joe” Milazzo, Frank and Vera Cordo, and Vincent and Edwina Cordo. Michael was additionally predeceased by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Manfred A. “Fritz” and Margaret C. (Ferrera) Matrulli; and sister-in-law, Margaret Mardany. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Wynn Hospital for their care and compassion. Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 3:00-5:00 pm. at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Michael’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence at 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery.
