Maryanne Flemma Wiatr

Mrs. Maryanne Flemma Wiatr, age 56, of New Hartford, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 20, 2006 at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center. Her loving family was by her side at the time of her passing. Born in Utica on March 31, 1950, Maryanne was the daughter of Letizia “Letty” (Labombarda) Flemma and the late Pasquale D. Flemma. Raised and educated locally, she was a 1967 graduate of St. Francis DeSales High School. Maryanne continued her academic career at Maria Regina College in Syracuse, NY and subsequently majored in sociology at Utica College of Syracuse University. On September 13, 1975 she was married to Edmund J. Wiatr, Jr. Enamored of each other from the day they met, they enjoyed nearly 31 years of mutual love and friendship. Gifted with a faithful and unselfish nature, Maryanne followed her husband’s career with the Department of Defense since 1976. While stationed overseas in Germany, Maryanne became involved with the Ramstein Officers Wives Club. She accepted the position of Bazaar Chairperson and was recognized for her leadership role and success. While living in Germany for several years, Maryanne also found time to seek out her ancestral roots in Italy. Several visits to never known before family became the apex of her overseas tour with her husband. Maryanne’s foremost priorities in her life were her family and her home. Her primary concern was being a good wife, a loving mother, and a reliable friend, all roles she took very seriously. She gave of her love unconditionally, especially when it came to her children: she and her daughter were best friends, and her son could do no wrong. A nurturing and focused woman, Maryanne was the cornerstone of her family, providing strength and stability to her loved ones. She enjoyed a variety of pastimes, and was a master shopper and an accomplished cook and baker. Her guests enjoyed her many culinary delights made from wonderful family recipes. She entertained with a flair and hospitality of warm welcome. As a reflection of her social commitments, Maryanne’s love for parties and cooking was evidenced in her “Bunch 4 Lunch” group who routinely met at each other’s homes or shared private lunches. The group consisted of Pauline Giovinazzo, Carol Gilberti, Kamleh Tehan, Loretta Romano, Nadia Casab, and remembering as well, Bertha Tehan and Barbara Casatelli. These friends were the keystone of a long and enduring relationship. Maryanne was a communicant of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish. Maryanne is survived by her beloved husband, Ed; her daughter Anne Marie Wiatr of New Hartford; her son and daughter-in-law, Edmund III and Colleen Wiatr of Utica; her granddaughter Brianna, to whom she was especially devoted; and her mother, Letizia “Letty” Flemma. Also surviving are her siblings, with whom she shared an exceptional closeness. They include two sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Gregory Kadrlik of Nebraska, and Patricia and Renato Donato of Albany, NY; and one brother and sister-in-law, George M. and Lisa Flemma of New York City, NY. Maryanne also leaves behind several beloved nieces and nephews, with special mention of Debi Gross and Brenda Caswell; endeared to Maryanne was her Godchild and niece, Latricia Kadrlik, as well as her newest niece, Kate Juliette Flemma; aunts and uncles, including Gilda Guida, and the Honorable John and Jean Flemma; many cousins, especially acknowledging Glenda Nikodem, confidante to Maryanne for many years; her mother-in-law, Helen T. Wiatr; brother-in-law Stanley M. Wiatr; sisters-in-law, Connie and her husband Frank Lagase, and Irene Major; and her friend, Christine Furcinito, who shared a long and true friendship. She was predeceased by her father, Pasquale D. Flemma; and her father-in-law, Edmund J. Wiatr, Sr. The family offers its deepest gratitude to Dr. Atul Butala, who was a source of hope and optimism; Dr. Roger Breslow, Maryanne’s longtime physician, with special mention of Christine; Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center 6th floor staff, especially Robin and Deanna, for their expertise and compassion; personnel of the CCU, especially Michelle, Larry, and Darryl for their support and guidance; Sister Maureen Denn, Father Val Krul, Father John Rose, and Msgr. Willenburg for the spiritual guidance they rendered to Maryanne. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4-8 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. For those wishing to do so, memorial contributions in Maryanne’s memory may be made to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
