Mrs. Mary Madeline (Cefali) Garofalo

CLINTON – Mrs. Mary Madeline (Cefali) Garofalo, age 83, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 29, 2025. Born in Utica on November 15, 1941, Mary—affectionately known as “Madeline” to those closest to her—was the cherished daughter of the late Victor D. Cefali and Josephine M. (Bosco) Cefali DeMola. She also knew the love and guidance of her stepfather, the late Querico “Rico” DeMola. A proud graduate of T.R. Proctor High School, Class of 1959, she later pursued college courses in business and banking. During her time at Proctor, she formed lifelong bonds and especially enjoyed gathering with her sorority sisters. On August 29, 1964, Madeline was united in marriage to Dominick “Dick” Garofalo, Jr. What began as a high school romance blossomed into a loving and devoted union that has spanned over 61 years. Together, they built a beautiful life centered on family, faith, and unwavering love. Upon graduating from high school, Madeline began her career as a teller at Oneida National Bank. She later took time away from work to raise her children, a role she embraced wholeheartedly and with unwavering love. When she returned to the workforce, she rejoined the banking industry, ultimately overseeing the operations in the wire transfer department. A true matriarch, Madeline’s family was the center of her world. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, finding her greatest joy in the company of her loved ones during celebrations and special occasions—especially the holidays. She had a gift for creating a fun-loving and welcoming atmosphere. Madeline possessed a beautiful and generous heart that extended beyond her family to everyone she encountered. Most of all, she adored her grandchildren—they were the light of her life. She often said, “The proudest thing I achieved was raising my family.” Madeline was a proud member of the former Sons of Italy. She looked forward each year to reuniting with her classmates at annual class reunions. A devoted member of the Bills Mafia, she cheered enthusiastically for her favorite team. Madeline also found great joy in playing Bingo, taking trips to the casino to try her luck at the slots, and enjoying card games with friends. At one time, Madeline was a parishioner of St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church, where she generously volunteered her time for parish events. Madeline is survived by her husband, Dick; children and their spouses, Denise and Dr. Patrick Lynch, Dana Marie and Andy Hettinger, and Dominick III and Carolanne Garofalo; and treasured grandchildren, Merissa Lynch, Dr. Brittany Lynch; Slade Laszewski, Logan Laszewski; Kailey Garofalo, Taylor Grace Garofalo, and Camryn Garofalo. She fondly remembered her sisters and brother-in-law who preceded her, Congetta N. “Connie” and William P. Buehler, Sr., and Marian C. Petrosino. She is further survived by her brother-in-law, Joseph Petrosino, Sr.; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins; in-laws, James P. Standridge (the late Adelyn Standridge); and many wonderful friends. She was additionally predeceased by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dominick Sr. and Teadosia “Mae” (Getti) Garofalo; and in-laws, Robert and Dawn R. Garofalo. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Dr. Mian, Dr. Eldridge, and Dr. Jason Sloane, Pat Rosati, ANP, and Taylor Unser FNP for their care and compassion; as well as to the staff of Wynn Hospital. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Mary Madeline’s Mass of Christian Burial and Celebration of Life, which will commence Saturday, August 9, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church, 422 Tilden Ave. There will be an opportunity to greet the family at the conclusion of Mass.
