Mary R. Fierro

UTICA - Mary R. Fierro, age 95, passed away peacefully and gracefully on Thursday, April 27, 2017 in the comfort of her home. Born in Utica on November 13, 1921, Mary was the daughter of the late James and Gaetana “Catherine” (Vignola) Fierro. She was a graduate of T.R. Proctor’s 1st graduating class. In her working years, Mary was dedicated in her secretarial positions at General Electric Company. Mary was an avid and adroit bridge aficionado, and she played the challenging and strategic card game many times a week. She was a rapacious reader with a preference for Reader’s Digest (large-print only) and the Sunday Observer-Dispatch. In her younger years, she was gifted in artistry and enjoyed bowling and golf. She felt blessed to have had a wonderful life filled with nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who honored and loved her. Mary was a member of several local senior centers and a communicant of St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church. She attended Mass with reverence and renewed spirituality. Her home was packed with prayers, Rosary beads, and the saying “Jesus suffered more”… Her greatest wish was to be reunited in the afterlife with those she loved who have gone before her. Her vision of heaven was always a beautiful one, and now she is at peace in the presence of her Lord. Mary is survived by several nieces and nephews, with special mention of Dolores Borys, Joan and Philip Jones, and Kathleen Madia; her great-nieces, great-nephews, and a generation that followed; and her longtime friend, Phyllis Finn. She was predeceased by her siblings and their spouses, Anthony and Mamie Fierro, Angeline and Anthony S. Pucine, Paul and Virginia Fierro, Louis Fierro, Rose and Edwin Belanger, Josephine and Anthony Costanzo, and James A. Fierro who was killed in action in World War II; and her nephews, Anthony Madia Sr., and Henry “Hank” Borys. The family wishes to thank Mary’s caring neighbors who assisted and were very respectful to her; and the Utica Police Department/Rescue One for their kindness during a difficult time. The family honored and commemorated Mary’s life at a private time. Mary’s funeral service and Entombment in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum were held privately.
