Marion M. (Sykes) Srour-Sherwood

Mrs. Marion M. (Sykes) Srour-Sherwood, age 89, formerly of Utica and more recently of Clinton, passed away on Friday, October 23, 2009 at the Katherine Luther Home Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Inc. with her loving family by her side. Born in Horseheads, NY on September 11, 1920, Marion was the daughter of the late George and Agnes (Berbary) Sykes. She was raised and educated in the town of her birth. After relocating to Utica, she graduated from the Mohawk Beauty Culture School. She married Michael G. Srour and raised a family with him; he passed away on October 25, 1988. She was subsequently united in a marriage of several years with the late Murphy Sherwood. Marion enjoyed a 30-year career as a successful and popular hairdresser, primarily serving her customers at Marion's Beauty Salon located on Scott St. She was a woman blessed with gracious hospitality and she cherished the company of her family and friends. Her home was open to all and she entertained with much generosity. The sparkle in her eye, her love of dancing, and other wonderful attributes led to a life well-lived. For many years she was an active member of several civic and community organizations, notably the Democratic Women's Club, the Syrian American Club, Hospice Care, the Moose Lodge, and New Hartford Elks Lodge. Marion is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia A. and Joseph Karrat of Baldwinsville; a son and daughter-in-law, George M. and Sandra Srour of Sauquoit; her grandchildren, Pamella and Mark Johnson, Amy and Frank Brown, Jennifer and David Prusinowski, Christopher Srour, and George and Christina Srour; and her great-grandchildren, Nicholas Johnson, Michelle Johnson, Ellyn Prusinowski, Lea Prusinowski, Andrew Prusinowski, Francesca Brown, and Cohen Srour. She is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, George and Connie Sykes; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and in-laws. She was predeceased by 2 sisters, Mabel Sykes, and Florence Julian; and a brother, Al Sykes. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-4 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. By family request please omit floral offerings. For those wishing to do so, memorial contributions may be made to either the Alzheimers Association or to the American Heart Association; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Marion’s funeral service will commence on Monday morning at 8:30 from the funeral home and at 9:30 at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
