Margaret M. "Maggie" (Herbert) Connors

Mrs. Margaret M. "Maggie" (Herbert) Connors, age 88, of New York Mills, passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2009 in the privacy of her home with her loving family by her side. Born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on April 19, 1921, Margaret was the daughter of the late Louis and Mary (Leposa) Herbert. She was raised and educated in Parish, NY and graduated from Parish High School. She then attended New Mexico Western College and continued her collegiate studies at Syracuse University where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in education. On March 9, 1940 in Oswego, she married Albert T. Connors with whom she shared 57 years prior to his passing on August 30, 1997; they were blessed with a devoted union of love and respect. For 23 years, Maggie taught elementary school, holding teaching positions in Glen Bernie, MD, Ontario, NY, Rome, NY, and eventually New York Mills Elementary School for 19 years, retiring in 1976. A loving, warm, nurturing woman, Maggie accepted people as they were. She was generous of heart and charitable by nature. She experienced a lively and fulfilling life animated by her husband, children, and most of all, her grandchildren. The holidays brought much joy to her as it was a time to entertain her beloved family and friends. For many years, prior to her husband’s passing, she enjoyed her winters in Ormond Beach, Florida where they opened their doors and extended hospitality to all their northern family and friends. She was a member of the Syracuse University Alumni Association and the NY State Retired Teachers Association. Devoted to her Catholic faith, she was a communicant of the Our Lady of the Rosary Church. Margaret is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Marie and Donald Harwood of Brewerton, NY, and Donna and Gregory Roberts of Yorkville; her grandchildren, Elizabeth and James Loforte of Farmington, NY, Donald H. and Anne Harwood of Charlotte, NC, Alice-Anne Harwood of Hamden, CT, Michael and Laura Harwood of Brewerton, NY, Maureen Roberts Bruce of New York Mills, Kathleen and Eriksen Stropp of Brewerton, and Carolyn K. and Derek Wolfanger of Dewitt; and her great-grandchildren, Corinne and Daniel Bruce, with whom she resided, Marissa, Kylie and Scott Loforte, Kelly and Shane Stropp, Ryan and Dylan Wolfanger, Hannah and Chloe Harwood, Liam, Jamison, and Finley Harwood. Survivors also include her sisters and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth and Edward Zaluski of Clay, NY, Anna R. Nesbitt of N. Syracuse, Wilma and Donald Cleveland of Arlington, TX, and Mary and Louis Gass of West Monroe, NY; her brothers and sisters-in-law, George Herbert of Camden, NY, Steven and Yolanda Herbert of Syracuse, Lawrence “Mike” and Louise Herbert of West Monroe, NY, Arnold and Beverly Herbert of Parish, NY, and Donald and Shirley Herbert of Central Square, NY; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and in-laws, Carol and Harry Carter of Pinehurst, NC. She was predeceased by her brothers, William Herbert, Francis Herbert, Louis T. Herbert, Charles Herbert, Joseph Herbert, Victor Herbert, Henry Herbert, and John P. Herbert; and several sisters-in-law. The family is grateful to the New York Mills Fire Dept. Rescue Unit, and Rev. Felix Colosimo and Rev. Anthony LaFache for all their care, attention, and prayers. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00-7:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. By family request, please omit floral offerings. For those wishing to do so, please consider memorial contributions in Maggie's name to the Music, Art & Drama Program or the Library of the New York Mills Schools, in honor of her fondness and love for her students; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Margaret’s funeral service will commence on Thursday morning at 9:00 from the funeral home and at 10:00 at the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery, Cleveland, NY.
