Katherine M. (DeBartolomeo) Schiavetta

Mrs. Katherine M. (DeBartolomeo) Schiavetta, age 96, of Utica, passed away on Good Friday, April 2, 2010 at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center with the love and support of her daughter by her side. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana on January 16, 1914, Katherine was the daughter of the late Ross and Beatrice (Morlando) DeBartolomeo. Along with her family, she traveled to Italy where they resided for a period of time, returning to the United States and Utica at the age of 13. On June 12, 1937 she married Frank J. Schiavetta with whom she shared 48 years prior to his passing in 1984; they were truly united by a bond that was rooted in their love for their family. They sacrificed to provide a better life for their children and encouraged them to attain their goals and to reach their dreams. Katherine knew the integrity of hard work and will be remembered fondly as a sales clerk at Nichols Discount City, the position from which she retired in 1977. At home, she was admired by her children and family for her charm and grace, and she always found some bit of joy in every day that she lived. Her wisdom, strength of character, and constant presence for her family were the hallmarks of her life. She was a woman of simple means and self-taught abilities, yet she accomplished so much in life. She overcame most adversities by facing them with kindness and courage. Through her generosity and love, holidays were made special, every birthday was celebrated, and many good memories were created. For relaxation, she enjoyed her daily practice of solving word searches. Since she lived her life in the light of Christ’s teachings, it is fitting that she would pass on the day of Our Lord’s death. She was a parishioner of St. Anthony & St. Agnes Parish. Katherine is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Joseph A. and Diane Schiavetta of CT; and her daughter, Cathy F. Bohen of Bath, NY; Always close to her heart was the memory of her son-in-law, John E. Bohen, who passed away on January 3, 2001. She also leaves her grandchildren, Bethany-Jon and Nathan Alderman of Bath NY, and Tracy Lyn and Maxwell Manyara of Richmond, VA; and her great-grandhildren, John Arthur Alderman, and Lilliana Tendae Manyara. Survivors also include her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, especially acknowledging Jennifer Candido, who tended to her aunt’s daily needs and who Katherine absolutely adored; her great-nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews, and a great-great-great-niece, cousins, and friends, especially Santina DiFiore who was a devoted friend and honored her relationship by “making a dish of macaroni every Sunday” for Katherine. She was predeceased by her in-laws. The family expresses heartfelt appreciation to the nurses and staff of the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center, especially Alfonso Ortez, Joe L., and Sister Maureen Denn, for their outstanding commitment, concern and compassion. The graciousness and support of Andrea Mazza-Helmer and Margarita Maniero, was of great comfort to Cathy during this difficult time. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5:00-7:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Katherine’s funeral service will commence on Thursday afternoon at 12:00 from the funeral home and at 1:00 at St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow graveside at Calvary Cemetery.
