Katherine M. "Kathy" (Sike) Sowich

Katherine M. “Kathy” (Sike) Sowich, age 64, passed away on Friday, April 10, 2015. Kathy fought with fortitude and a great inner strength after battling multiple illnesses. Her loving family was at her side as she passed at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center. Born in New Hartford on December 30, 1950, Katherine was the daughter of the late Henry and Gladys (Parzych) Sike. Raised and educated locally, she attended Utica Free Academy and the Utica School of Commerce. At one time, she was wed to Joseph Sowich, a relationship that was blessed with their children. In 1993, Kathy met Frank Canorro and it was soon after that they formed a loving and supportive union focused on family. Kathy worked in her professional area of Accounting at various local establishments including the Savings Bank of Utica in the Mortgage Department, Utica College, and Urbanik’s Paint Company where she worked as a bookkeeper, the position from which she retired. Kathy was a loving, forgiving, affectionate woman. She loved life and lived it to her best every day. Her maternal nature earned her the love and esteem of her children and endeared her to her grandchildren who were her greatest joy. She would do anything and everything for them. She instilled in her children the values they would need to become caring, compassionate, and respectful adults. Kathy enjoyed traveling and applying her artistic talents in drawing, and handwriting. Kathy is survived by her children, Michelle Sowich-Shanley and her husband Kenneth Shanley of Chadwicks, Michael and Alka Sowich, and Christina Sowich who was loved as a daughter, all of Utica; her grandchildren and shining stars, Alyssa, Anjali, and Ayanna Sowich; her partner and companion, Frank Canorro of Utica; her brother and sister-in-law, Al and Christine Sike, and her nephew and godson, Alex Sike, all of Barneveld. The family is grateful to the staff of the Allen-Calder wing/3C at the Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare Center, especially Clarissa, Kim, Kathy, Megan, Joanna, and Dr. Charles Eldredge for the sensitive, and personal attention given to Kathy and her family. In keeping with Kathy’s wishes, her Celebration of Life was held privately.
