Mr. Jules J. "Joe" Poma, Sr.

CLINTON- Mr. Jules J. “Joe” Poma, Sr. passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 1, 2023, at the age of 90. Joe was born in Tunisia, Africa on September 12, 1932, to the late Vincent and Antionette Poma. Joe was raised and educated in Tunisia and France. With his family, he relocated to the United States at the age of 17. At one time Joe was married to Suzanne Rizzo, and from that union came the blessing of 3 children. Michele, Jules (Joe) and Tina. He later shared in a second union with Denise Incandella. Joe was employed as a union painter and wallpaper hanger. His skilled work could be seen in many churches and homes throughout the east coast. He was an exceptional athlete and boxed professionally for a period of time. He was proud to have won the Golden Glove twice. Joe also had a passion for soccer. He helped establish Utica’s first soccer team in the 1950’s. He was not only a great fighter in boxing but also fought and beat cancer three times. He was an “old-schooler” who held great and steadfast convictions. When he was determined, nothing stood in his way. He was always attuned to helping his family with their needs. Joe’s favorite pastime was fishing. Joe is survived by his children and their companions, Michele Poma and Thomas V. “Tom” Maugeri, Sr., Jules (Joe) Jr. and Tammy Poma, Tina Marchione and Chuck Bick, Sylvain and Cheryl Poma, and Stepdaughter Corrin and Michael Maldonado. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Harmony (Hanna) Collins, Christine (Hanna) Fusco, Adrienne (Marchione) and Jim Fitzgerald, Nicole Poma and John Lints, Adam Maldonado, and Casey Poma. Joe also cherished his ten great-grandchildren. He held close to his heart the memory of three grandchildren who predeceased him; Jules J. Poma III, Jolene Poma, Joseph Jules Poma. He is survived by his sister, Claudine (her late husband Al Albercio); his brother, Charles Poma and Sandy; and his sister-in-law, Maneau Poma, He is predeceased by his brothers, Bernard Poma, Anthony Poma, and Paul Poma, as well as his special friend Terry. Joe’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the entire staff at Foltsbrook Center for their care and compassion. In keeping with Joe’s wishes, there will be no public services. His family will honor his life in a private gathering.
