Joseph R. Gigliotti

Mr. Joseph R. Gigliotti, age 82, of Utica, passed away on Sunday, July 6, 2008 at the Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare Center with his loving family by his side. Born in Utica on December 10, 1925, Joseph was the son of the late Giuseppe and Theresa (Sirianni) Gigliotti. Raised and educated in Utica, he was a graduate of T. R. Proctor High School. On May 3, 1947 he married the former Maria A. “Mary” Del Mastro with whom he shared 61 years in a beloved union. Joseph was a well known electrical salesman in the Utica area. A longtime employee of the M&L Electric Company, he retired from Valley Electric as a purchasing agent. A loving patriarch, he treasured the time he spent with his family. He always took an active interest in his children’s lives, and was present at every special event. He was a good listener, patient and understanding, and ready to offer support and guidance. He kept his legendary sense of humor to the end, sharing a smile and a joke with everyone he met. He loved to play cards, especially pitch, with his grandkids. As an impressive history buff, Joseph incorporated his passion and knowledge to make family vacations more meaningful. Joseph is survived by his wife, Mary; his children and their families, Joseph Gigliotti III, Robert Gigliotti and Carol Baker, all of Utica, Mary Theresa Wood, and Michele and Rick Mider, all of Syracuse. He cherished the memory of his daughter-in-law, Barbara J. Gigliotti, and his son-in-law, James Wood, who preceded him in death. Survivors also include his grandchildren, Cara and Greg Greer, Kristyn and Tony Masone, Joseph A. Gigliotti, Nicole and Bryan Gould, Christine and Jamie Whelchel, Robert Gigliotti, Jr., Darlene Cannerelli and fiancé Justin Pettersen, and Joseph D. and Katie Cannerelli; his great-grandchildren, Alana Greer; Martianne Masone, Anthony Rieley Masone; Alyssa Gould; Kevin Watson, Jamie, and Dylan Whelchel; his brother and sister-in-law, Donald A. and Judy Gigliotti of Utica, and a large extended family. He was predeceased by his brother, Bernard Gigliotti. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of the Active Day Center of the Presbyterian Home for the care and kindness they offered Joseph. Visitation will be held Wednesday (today) from 4:00-7:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Joseph’s funeral service will commence on Thursday morning at 10:00 from the funeral home and at 11:00 at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery.
