Josephine Joan Eleanor (DeFazio) Palmieri

Mrs. Josephine Joan Eleanor (DeFazio) Palmieri, age 76, formerly of Rutger St., Utica, and more recently of New York Mills, passed away on Friday, July 20, 2007, at the Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare Center, following a brief illness. Her loving family was by her side at the time of her passing. Born in Utica on October 13, 1930, Josephine was the daughter of the late John J. and Edith (Contento) DeFazio. Raised and educated in Utica, she furthered her studies by attending the Faxton Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1951. On September 17, 1955, she married Joseph A. Palmieri, with whom she shared a loving union until his passing. At one time, Josephine held employment as a surgical nurse at Faxton and Memorial Hospitals. After 13 years at home devoted to her children, she returned to work and spent 22 years serving others as a Registered Nurse at Faxton Hospital, and Children's Hospital and Rehabilitation Center. Josephine's foremost concern was always the care and consideration of her children. Warm-hearted and giving, she was a mother and father to them. They were blessed with her guidance as an excellent parent, a good provider, and a best friend. She was also a great sister who loved her family and was always ready to listen or lend a hand. With her remarkable inner strength and special sense of humor, Josephine made an everlasting impression on everyone with whom she came in contact. She loved caring for her cats, and in her spare time she enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting, and sharing her handcrafted items with her loved ones. She was very charitable of heart. She was a member of the Faxton Alumni Association, and a communicant of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish. Josephine is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Ann Marie and Jeffrey Krom of Peralta, New Mexico, Theresa Marie Palmieri of Buffalo, NY, and Patricia Marie and Charles Phelan of Rochester, NY; her sons and daughters-in-law, John Anthony and his wife, Sheri Spink-Palmieri of Cicero, NY, Joseph Michael Palmieri of Laurel, Maryland, Stephen Robert and Susan Palmieri of Deerfield, NY, Philip Edward and Julie Palmieri of Presque Isle, Maine, and Michael Anthony Palmieri and his fiancee, Pam Harosia of South Trenton, NY; and her grandchildren, Joseph and Nicole Krom, Elizabeth and Gabriel Montoya, Ian Palmieri, Shane Palmieri, Alexandra Palmieri, Stephen Palmieri, Jr., Dylan Tompkins, Macie Tompkins, Ethan Palmieri, Christine Palmieri, and Callie Palmieri. Also surviving are her sister and brother-in-law, Marie E. and George A. Kalil of Westmoreland; her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins; and her brother-in-law, Frank L. Palmieri of Albany. She also leaves many wonderful friends. The family wishes to thank Josephine's primary physician, Dr. Amy V. Gorczynski, for her professionalism, love, and concern, and the staff of 2 West at the Allen-Calder Wing of Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare Center for their care and compassion. Visitation will be held Monday (today) from 4:00-7:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Josephine's Funeral Service will commence on Tuesday morning at 10:00 at the funeral home and at 11:00 at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish at Mt. Carmel Church, where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery.
