John A. Cecilia

Mr. John A. Cecilia, age 72, of Utica, passed away on Friday, January 11, 2008 at the Presbyterian Home for CNY, Inc. with the support of his family by his side. Born in Little Falls on November 12, 1935, John was the son of the late Gino and Rose (DiPietro) Cecilia. He was raised and educated locally. On July 21, 1956 he married the former Virginia Mallozzi. During their 51 years together, they were dedicated to each other and prioritized and embraced their parental roles. John began his working career affiliated with his wife’s family business, the Madison Bowling Garden located on Kossuth Ave. He co-owned and managed the establishment for many years. He was subsequently employed as a custodian for the Utica School District working in several schools and lastly at the Administration Building until his retirement in 2000. A hard-working and selfless man, John was sensitive to others’ feelings and equally thoughtful and respectful to all. As a father and “PoPoo”, he touched the lives of each of his children and grandchildren with his paternal dedication and kind acts. Sunday dinners were his favorite and most precious time to gather his family to enjoy their company and conversation. As a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, he served on the Board of Deacons and was recognized for his caring concern, a quality he so openly displayed. John is survived by his wife, Virginia; his daughters and sons-in-law, Joann and Steve Carl of New Hartford, Patricia Cecilia of Whitesboro, and Lori and Jeff Farrell of Oriskany; and his cherished and adored grandchildren, twins Jenna and Shelby, Mackenzie Carl, and Daniel and Samuel Farrell. Also surviving are his sisters and brother-in-law, Jean A. Green, and Rosemary and David Martin, all of Michigan; his brother, Paul M. Cecilia of Whitesboro; his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins. The family also acknowledges Dorothy Buley and Rosann Mino whom he considered and loved as daughters. The family extends gratitude to Dr. Sheila Lemke, and Dr. Dilip Kachare who have been compassionate and professional; the Oneida Oncology group whose staff shared in the experience of his illness with laughter and family concern; and the Presbyterian Home for CNY, Inc., Birch Unit for their outstanding efforts in providing the love, kindness, and comfort that was so much appreciated. Special thanks also to Jo Grogan who was an inspirational presence during this difficult time, and to John’s pastor, Rev. Dr. Robert G. Umidi and his fellow congregation members who shared in a mutually positive fellowship during the duration of his illness. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2:00-5:00 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave. Please omit floral offerings. John’s Funeral Service and Celebration of Life will commence on Monday afternoon at 12:00 from the funeral home and at 1:00 at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 714 Washington Street, Utica. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
